Prison
Drama
Very dark

A Prophet drops you into a French maximum-security prison and refuses to look away. Malik arrives illiterate, terrified, and disposable; six years later he's someone else entirely. This isn't redemption — it's a slow, unglamorous education in power, shot by Jacques Audiard with hallucinatory dream sequences and unbearable close-quarters tension. For anyone who wants a crime film that feels lived, not staged.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you have a taste for slow-burn prison dramas where power is learned through small, grinding choices rather than explosions, and you don't mind sitting with a long, patient rise.

Skip it if you need a lot of plot momentum or a clear hero to root for; this one is more interested in how a man is quietly shaped by the place that holds him than in thrills.

What it asks of you: Almost two and a half hours of watching closely, with long stretches of silence and tension that build by degrees rather than arriving in set pieces.

If you liked this

GoodFellas1990

The mentor-protégé crime saga at its most seductive — a rise through the ranks narrated with dark charm, showing exactly how loyalty curdles into survival instinct.

But It's glossy and gleeful where A Prophet is austere; the fun of it might feel like a different film entirely.

The Godfather1972

The definitive slow-burn crime dynasty — patient, operatic, and obsessed with how loyalty and violence build a man into someone else.

But Three hours, deliberate pacing, and so thoroughly absorbed into culture it may feel like homework rather than discovery.

City of God2002

A kid swallowed whole by a criminal hierarchy he never chose, told with the same kinetic urgency and refusal to sentimentalise the violence.

But Frenetic editing and constant brutality can feel exhausting rather than illuminating if you want something quieter.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Le Trou1960

Both treat prison as a closed economy of trust and betrayal; Le Trou is the quiet ancestor whose austerity Audiard modernised into something more feverish.

A cold, almost documentary account of prisoners plotting an escape through trust, craft, and procedure — the same claustrophobic tension Audiard builds, stripped of any stylistic flourish.

But Black-and-white, deliberately slow, and built on method rather than momentum — nothing here for anyone wanting action.

Gomorrah2008

Multiple strands of mafia life stripped of all glamour — bleak, procedural, and unflinching in exactly the register A Prophet trades in.

But No single hero to hold onto and a fractured structure that resists easy investment.

Animal Kingdom2010

A young man pulled into a criminal family's power struggle, all simmering dread and domestic menace rather than action.

But Slower and more interior — the violence is threat more than spectacle, which some will find frustratingly restrained.

Eastern Promises2007

An outsider rising inside a closed criminal brotherhood, claustrophobic and tense, with the same interest in earned trust as currency.

But Tighter and more singular in focus — less epic sweep, more contained thriller.

Scarface1983

The immigrant rise-through-crime story played at maximum volume — excess, paranoia, and a warning wrapped in spectacle.

But Campy and over-the-top where A Prophet is controlled; the tonal gap is enormous.

Bronson2009

One man's brutal, theatrical self-invention inside the British prison system — stylised, strange, and unforgettable.

But More surreal performance piece than character study; less about hierarchy and mentorship, more about spectacle.

Cell 2112009

A Spanish prison thriller about survival and moral compromise, tense and plot-driven in a way that complements the slower burn of A Prophet.

But Leans harder into thriller mechanics and less into patient character transformation.

Oz1997

Same institutional machine of gangs, mentors, and survival by any means, just serialised long enough to watch the corruption happen in real time.

The original prison ensemble drama — factions, hierarchies, and brutal initiation stretched across six seasons instead of two hours, with the same unsentimental eye on how power gets made.

But Pulpier and more melodramatic in places — this is HBO finding its voice, not polishing it.

Election1999

Both are studies of a supposed nobody learning the rules of a closed institution well enough to become its new power — just swap cell block for classroom.

A pitch-black high-school comedy about an underestimated outsider who studies the system, learns to manipulate it, and quietly takes over — Malik's arc played for satire instead of dread.

But It's funny, small-scale, and bloodless — nothing here carries the physical danger or moral weight of prison life.
