Vis a Vis

A Spanish prison drama that strips away sentimentality and replaces it with claustrophobia, moral rot, and the kind of character work that makes you complicit. Macarena enters guilty and leaves transformed—or destroyed, you're never entirely sure. For anyone who loved Orange Is the New Black but wanted it meaner, darker, less interested in redemption.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like prison stories built on power games, shifting alliances and a slow-burning moral pull, where the setting's politics matter as much as the plot.

Skip it if you will not enjoy reading subtitles for hours, or want a self-contained story each week, since this is a long, melodramatic serial that wants your sustained attention.

What it asks of you: Expect a long haul: roughly an hour an episode across four seasons, with slow setup, dense ensemble scenes and a darker, more claustrophobic mood than the premise suggests.

Orange Is the New Black2013

The obvious comparison: ensemble prison drama with humour and humanity woven through brutality. But where OITNB leans toward redemption, this one lets you see how systems actually grind people down without flinching.

But It's gentler and more hopeful than Vis a Vis, which some find frustrating after loving the Spanish show's refusal to comfort you.

The Fall2013

Stella Gibson is one of TV's great creations, and the show's obsession with psychological corruption and predatory violence mirrors Vis a Vis's interest in how power poisons everyone it touches, captor and captive alike.

But Slower and more methodical; it prioritizes investigation over plot, which can feel restrained if you're chasing adrenaline.

MINDHUNTER2017

American crime procedural that shares Vis a Vis's fascination with psychology, power dynamics, and the people who manipulate systems. Both shows understand that the real danger is often bureaucratic, not just violent.

But It's cerebral and dialogue-heavy rather than visceral, and the first season ends on a deliberately unresolved note.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

A Prophet2009

Both are about how confinement reveals and remakes character. Both understand that the real prison is not the bars but the people trapped with you.

French film about a young man imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit, forced into the machinery of survival inside. It shares Vis a Vis's understanding of how jail reorganizes your soul and your loyalties, but in ninety tight minutes of cinema rather than a season.

But It's a film, not a series—no time to sit with secondary characters. The Arabic and French dialogue and subtitles demand attention, and it does not entertain so much as hypnotize.

La Casa de Papel2017

Spanish ensemble thriller with the same audacious pace and willingness to kill characters you care about. Criminal enterprise, coded names, loyalty tested to breaking point, and an ending you won't see coming.

But The heists can feel more fantastical than the grounded brutality of Vis a Vis, which breaks the spell for some viewers.

La Casa de Papel poster

Godless2017

A frontier town run by women, a mining operation that becomes a prison. The show builds suffocating tension from isolation and lawlessness, with violence that arrives suddenly and sticks with you.

But Western tropes and slower pacing mean it takes time to hit its stride; the gender dynamics can feel a bit schematic.

Godless poster

Banished2015

British historical drama about Australia's first penal colony. It shares Vis a Vis's dark understanding of how confinement corrupts, and how the innocent become criminals just to survive.

But Only one season, and the production design—though authentic—can feel grey and repetitive in a way that bores rather than oppresses.

Counterpart2017

Espionage thriller where identical worlds collide and trust becomes impossible. The paranoia and moral ambiguity echo Vis a Vis's refusal to give you a side to root for cleanly.

But The sci-fi premise can overshadow character work, and it pivots toward spectacle in the second season.

Bodyguard2018

British political thriller with the same white-knuckle tension and the understanding that institutions fail people systematically. Every episode raises the stakes; you cannot stop watching.

But Smaller scale and shorter run time than Vis a Vis, and some of the twists depend on contrivance rather than character logic.

The Killing2011

Danish crime series defined by grit and restraint. Sarah Lund is driven by a need for truth that destroys her; the show respects your intelligence enough not to explain everything.

But It's profoundly bleak without much relief, and the procedural elements can slow momentum when you want catharsis.

Kastanjemanden2021

Both understand that the hunt for justice can corrupt the hunters as much as imprisonment corrupts the hunted. Both are willing to let that logic play out.

Danish serial killer procedural that finds moral horror in what good people will do to catch evil. It has Vis a Vis's intensity but filters it through an entirely different lens: investigation rather than immersion, and an ending that punches like a blade.

But Darker and more European in pace and register—less soap, more dread. If you watched Vis a Vis for the characters' relationships, this will feel colder.

The Night Of2016

Both are about innocent people ground down by systems that don't know they exist. Both understand that survival sometimes means becoming someone you weren't.

American miniseries about a young man trapped by circumstance and the legal system. It spends eight hours watching him transform, watching the machine work, with the same unflinching interest in how institutions fail. Devastating.

But Slower and more formally controlled than Vis a Vis, interested in procedure and psychology over action. Some find it glacial. It also ends in a place of incomplete justice that some viewers find unsatisfying rather than devastating.
