But Nearly three hours long with no tidy ending — if you need closure, this will frustrate you.

Mindhunter is about the invention of a science; M is the film that first dramatized the impulse behind it, decades before the FBI gave it a name.

Fritz Lang's silent-era-adjacent masterpiece invented the modern manhunt narrative — police and criminals both hunting a child murderer, using early forensic thinking decades before profiling existed.

But It's a 90-year-old German film with the pacing and grain to match; not everyone can adjust to it.

Manhunter1986

Michael Mann's original Hannibal Lecter film and the direct ancestor of Mindhunter's whole premise — an agent studying a killer's mind until it starts studying him back.

Mindhunter dramatizes the interview room; this is the real footage that room was modeled on, and it's harder to look away from because nobody's acting.

A documentary series built almost entirely from real prison-interview audio — the exact activity Mindhunter fictionalizes, minus the fiction, and just as chilling in the killer's calm self-narration.

But No dramatic scaffolding or character arcs to soften it — just a man talking, at length, about himself.

Killing Eve2018

Both are studies of obsessive proximity to violence, but Killing Eve takes the same engine — professional fascinated by killer — and runs it as heightened, seductive pulp instead of procedural dread.

The same hunter-obsessed-with-hunted dynamic, blown up into stylish, campy, genuinely funny spy thriller — a killer and the woman chasing her who can't stop thinking about each other.

But Trashy and playful where Mindhunter is austere; if you want restraint and realism, this will feel like a costume party.
