Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a slow-burn procedural where the obsession of a cartoonist-turned-amateur detective matters more than the killings, and you are happy to sit with paperwork, cipher puzzles and years of dead ends.

Skip it if you need the killings to drive the story, since the attacks are brief and most of the film's long running time goes to arguments, records and dead-end leads.

What it asks of you: Settle in for well over two and a half hours, with a deliberate pace that builds dread through waiting, repetition and mounting doubt rather than through release.

Something you would not have found on your own.

M1931

Zodiac's real subject — a metropolis gripped by an uncatchable killer, its institutions straining and cracking under the pressure — was already Lang's subject nearly eighty years earlier, told with the same procedural patience.

Fritz Lang's early sound masterpiece about a city hunting a child murderer — police, press, and criminals all mobilised, all failing, all obsessed.

But Silent-era pacing and German expressionist style will feel alien if you're used to modern thrillers.

Gyllenhaal again, this time as a detective unraveling as a case consumes him — a bleaker, more claustrophobic cousin to his Graysmith obsession.
