Fritz Lang's early talkie splits its gaze between the police hunting a child-killer and the criminal underworld hunting him too, since his crimes are bad for business. But Studio-system polish and a more conventional melodrama shape sand down some of Lang's German angularity.

Se7en1995

A grim, rain-soaked procedural that treats a city's rot as inseparable from its serial killer, with the same sense that catching him won't actually fix anything.

But Considerably more graphic and nihilistic than Lang's restraint — this one wants to make you feel sick, not just uneasy.

The Silence of the Lambs1991

The gold standard for getting inside a predator's head without excusing him, and for showing law enforcement as fallible, overwhelmed, and reliant on unlikely help.

But Its polish and thriller pacing make it a much easier watch than M — less an experience of dread, more a ride.

But Plot logic is shaky and the gore is theatrical rather than realistic; style is very much the point here, not restraint.

The Act of Killing2012

M imagines criminals policing a monster among them; this documentary shows real perpetrators of atrocity confronting, performing, and rationalizing their own guilt on camera — the same moral question with no fictional distance left.

A documentary in which real Indonesian death-squad leaders reenact their killings for camera, unflinchingly examining how a society metabolizes and even glorifies mass murder — M's underworld-polices-itself premise made unbearably literal and true.

But This is genuinely disturbing nonfiction, not entertainment in any conventional sense, and stays with you in an unpleasant way.
