Skip it if you need brisk plotting and a clear hero, since the detectives bicker, stumble and grind through rain-soaked fields for long stretches with little certainty to hold onto.

What it asks of you: Settle in for just over two hours, a deliberate pace that lingers on mud, waiting and failed leads, with comedy and unease swapping places without warning.

This is the great-grandfather of Memories of Murder — a city gripped by panic over a child-killer, cops floundering, and the unsettling suggestion that the ordinary world enables monsters. Bong is playing a very old, very German game.

Fritz Lang's silent-era-adjacent thriller basically invented the manhunt movie — a killer stalking children, a city turning on itself, and a finale that asks who really gets to judge a monster.

But It's 90+ years old, German expressionist, and its pace and silence-era acting style will feel alien if you need modern polish.

Hot Fuzz2007

Take the same premise — hopeless small-town cops facing violence way above their competence — and run it through pure farce instead of tragedy. It's the joke Memories of Murder is quietly always on the edge of telling.

Edgar Wright's action-comedy is a gleeful, blood-soaked spoof of small-town policing that shares Memories of Murder's fascination with cops who are in over their heads and a village hiding something rotten.

But It's played entirely for laughs and gore-comedy spectacle — if you want to stay in that somber, aching register, this will feel like a tonal betrayal.
