The Legend

Other titles called The Legend: the 1993 film.

A supernatural historical drama about a heavenly prince sent to rule Goguryeo who becomes entangled in tragedy, loss, and cosmic destiny. It blends Korean mythology with intimate human drama, spanning centuries through reincarnation. Visually sumptuous and emotionally operatic, it's for viewers who want their history mythic and their stakes celestial.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love myth-soaked historical epics where gods, ancient kingdoms and a slow-building romance share the same screen, and you don't mind a story that lingers on fate more than swordplay.

Skip it if you want brisk, action-led fantasy, since at 24 hourlong episodes its pace is deliberate and its romance and destiny talk can feel heavy and repetitive.

What it asks of you: Twenty-four hour-long episodes at a measured, sorrowful pace, asking you to sit with sorrow and sweeping history rather than hurry toward the next event.

The Master's Sun2013

Ghost-haunted romance with similar emotional depth and supernatural framework. Features Bae Yong Jun in a lead role that demands vulnerability alongside otherworldly mystery. Excellent chemistry drives the supernatural plot forward.

But The tone swings between comedy and darkness in ways that don't always land smoothly. Some will find the tonal whiplash jarring rather than charming.

Alchemy of Souls2022

Richly imagined fantasy world with reincarnation at its core. Focuses on cosmic duty versus personal desire, with production values that match The Legend's ambition. Genuinely moving emotional arcs beneath the spectacle.

But Slower pacing in the middle section tests patience. If you want constant plot momentum, this won't deliver it.

Goblin Slayer2018

Immortal protagonist bound by supernatural curse, searching for meaning across centuries. Balances mythology with intimate character moments. Stunningly shot and deeply romantic without sacrificing emotional stakes.

But The romantic triangle can feel repetitive. Some viewers find the whimsy undercuts the sadness it's trying to explore.

Peppermint Candy2000

Both use reincarnation and cyclical time not as fantasy convention but as a way to ask whether we ever truly escape our past, or if we're doomed to relive it.

Moves backward through Korean history via reincarnation of traumatic moments. Same spiritual DNA as The Legend—destiny, loss, historical weight compressed into intimate human scale. Lee Chang-dong's masterwork rewires how you understand causality and grief.

But Extraordinarily bleak and difficult. Watching backward through 40 years of national suffering demands emotional stamina. It does not comfort you.

Mr. Sunshine2018

Epic historical drama with supernatural undertones about destiny and duty. Operates on the same scale as The Legend with mature, complex characterization. Rewarding for patient viewers.

But Dense plotting requires attention; you'll miss things if you look away. Genuinely bleak at times, which isn't for everyone.

Once Upon a Time2017

Chinese fantasy romance spanning multiple lifetimes and worlds. Explores the cost of love across reincarnations with genuine stakes. If you liked the cosmic romance of The Legend, this hits similar notes.

But Lower budget shows in the visuals compared to the Korean productions above. The English subtitles occasionally clunk.

Tale of the Nine Tailed2020

Supernatural mythology with a 1000-year-old lead haunted by past trauma. Korean production values meet intimate character study. Explores immortality's loneliness with real tenderness.

But Unevenly paced, and the conspiracy plot thickens awkwardly. Some threads feel abandoned for the sake of the romance.

Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost2018

Heavenly royalty forbidden from mortal love; cosmic drama with genuine stakes. Ambitious scope across multiple realms. Emotionally devastating in ways that matter.

But Requires tolerance for melodrama at operatic volume. Some plot twists feel arbitrary rather than inevitable.

Heavy Sweetness, Ash-like Frost poster

Angel Eyes2014

Past-life connections drive present-day narrative. Slower, more intimate approach to destiny and second chances. Bae Yong Jun shows quieter, more nuanced work.

But Deliberately paced and low-key. If you want spectacle, this trades it for restraint.

Descendants of the Sun2016

Military romance with larger-than-life stakes and genuine emotional core. Well-shot, excellently cast. A comfort watch for the apocalyptic-drama fan.

But Leans more toward adventure romance than the mythic depths of The Legend. Lighter in every sense.

The Apothecary Diaries2023

Both trust viewers to sit with complex world-building and cultural specificity rather than over-explaining. Both use 'supernatural' to deepen character rather than escape it.

Fantasy mystery set in historical Asia with supernatural elements woven into logic puzzles. Shares The Legend's willingness to ground mythology in specific cultural detail. Visually inventive in completely different ways. Profoundly intelligent.

But Very slow-burn and cerebral. No romance to carry you if the mystery work doesn't grip you. Requires active attention.

Memories of Murder2003

Both are obsessed with whether Korean history *itself* is a character, and whether individuals are shaped by forces larger than themselves. One mythologizes; this one brutalizes. Same question, opposite answers.

Bong Joon-ho's serial-killer procedural set during Korea's 1980s. Shares The Legend's interest in Korean history as character-forming force, but approaches it through grit and moral ambiguity. Masterfully constructed and absolutely gripping.

But Violent, morally murky, relentlessly tense. Nobody goes on a spiritual journey—they just get ground down. Completely different energy from The Legend, which might be the point.
