The Apothecary Diaries is a slow-burn palace mystery dressed as costume drama: a pharmacist's daughter, sold into servitude, quietly outsmarts poisoners, hypochondriac concubines and court cover-ups using nothing but observation and a terrifying appetite for toxic plants. It's gentle, procedural, and oddly cozy despite the death count — closer to a herbal Sherlock Holmes than a bodice-ripper. Good for anyone who enjoys competence dressed up as humility.

The obvious next step: another young woman with strange authority stalking the corridors of an imperial harem, solving supernatural mysteries nobody else can touch. Same eerie, procedural calm, different flavour of magic.

But It trades Maomao's forensic rigor for the supernatural, so the mysteries resolve through spirits and curses rather than deduction.

Nirvana in Fire2015

A masked strategist returns to court to dismantle the men who destroyed his family, playing decades-long political chess with the same patient, plotting intelligence Maomao brings to poison cases. Gorgeous, devastating, superbly plotted.

But It's 54 episodes of dense court politics and long game revenge — a serious commitment with a much heavier emotional register.

An impoverished, brilliant young woman infiltrates an all-male imperial bureaucracy to become an official, using wit rather than status to survive. Same court, same cleverness, more romance-forward and openly hopeful in tone.

But The animation is older and softer, and the political stakes feel gentler — less forensic puzzle, more workplace ambition drama.

I, Claudius1976

Same engine: poison as political weapon, and a clever outsider (Claudius himself) surviving by being underestimated inside a court that kills the ambitious.

Ancient Rome's imperial court, riddled with poisoners, secret alliances and lethal small talk — decades before Maomao's palace, this BBC classic proved court intrigue and toxicology make perfect drama.

But The sets wobble, the pace is theatrical rather than cinematic, and it's built more on political monologue than mystery-solving.

Swap the palace for a hospital and Maomao's poison lore for differential diagnosis: a brilliant, antisocial outsider solves medical mysteries nobody else can see, one bizarre symptom at a time.

But It's contemporary, Western, and abrasive where Maomao is quiet — House is a jerk, not a curious wallflower.

Story of Yanxi Palace2018

A sharp-tongued palace maid uses forensic-minded cunning — dyes, poisons, court etiquette turned weapon — to survive and rise. If you love the detail of court life and lethal small objects, this delivers in spades.

But It's soapier and more vengeful than Maomao's world, with seventy-plus episodes of scheming rather than gentle mystery-solving.

A different flavour of Chinese-inspired fantasy court, following an ordinary girl swept into a brutal, beautifully realised imperial world she must learn to survive by her wits rather than her sword.

But It's darker and more overtly fantastical, with political worldbuilding that takes longer to reward patience than Maomao's tidy episodic cases.

A brilliant, deeply particular outsider notices the detail everyone else missed and solves the case through sheer observational obsession — Maomao's forensic eye, transplanted into a comic modern-day detective.

But It's broadly comic, case-of-the-week American network TV — none of the court politics or slow romantic tension.

Trade poison mysteries for childbirth and swap the ancient court for 1950s London, but keep the core pleasure: a skilled woman using hard-won medical knowledge to move confidently through a world that underestimates her.

But There's no mystery plot and no romance tension — it's a warm, episodic medical drama, not a detective story.
