Raven of the Inner Palace is a hushed, atmospheric fantasy about power exercised sideways — through ritual, rumour, and curse rather than armies. Each episode is a small mystery solved by a woman both feared and ignored, while a wary, slow-burn intimacy builds underneath the politics. Elegant, eerie, unhurried: for anyone who wants their court drama whispered, not shouted.

The obvious next step, and it earns the comparison: a clever, socially invisible woman inside a fantasy court solving poisonings and curses through pure procedural cunning, with the same wary pull between ruler and outsider.
But It's gentler and funnier than Raven — if you wanted the mysticism turned up and the humour turned down, it may feel too cosy.

Swap the supernatural curse for court conspiracy and you get the same tension: a mysterious outsider returning to a palace built on old debts, playing a long, careful game where every gesture is a message.
But Fifty-plus episodes of dense political maneuvering — a serious commitment with almost no fantasy element.

Onibaba1964
The Raven Consort survives because people fear what she might be; Onibaba's masked woman does exactly the same thing, decades earlier, stripped of romance and shot as folk horror instead of court fantasy.
A stark, sweat-soaked folk-horror film about two women living outside village society, one wearing a mask that makes her feared as something inhuman — the same idea of surviving by being feared rather than loved, pushed into pure dread.
But Black-and-white and unflinching about desperation and sex, with none of the anime's gentleness — this is genuinely upsetting, not eerie-cosy.

A Chinese fantasy drama with the same interest in old curses, forbidden pasts, and the weight tradition puts on individuals — plus genuinely gorgeous production design throughout.
But It's wuxia-adventure at heart, sprawling and plot-heavy, with far less of Raven's hush.
The Last Emperor1987
Koushun's confinement by inherited role and taboo has a real-world mirror in Puyi's actual life — both men discover the throne owns them long before they own anything.
A sweeping, lavish biopic about a real emperor raised inside the Forbidden City, isolated by ritual before he even understood what power was — the same claustrophobic sense that the palace itself is the true ruler.
But It's a three-hour historical epic with no mysticism or mystery plot, and a fairly bleak, unresolved emotional register.
