River Where the Moon Rises

A Goguryeo folktale reimagined as political intrigue: an ambitious princess weaponizes a soldier's devotion to claw toward power in ancient Korea. Lush, romantic, and sharp-edged, it balances court machinations against genuine intimacy. For those who love historical drama with a protagonist who refuses to be rescued.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy love stories tangled up with court scheming and a heroine who wants power as badly as she wants the man, so the romance feeds directly into the politics.

Skip it if you want a light, swift romance, because this is a long-haul, politically dense drama where the lovers' feelings can feel secondary to the plotting and the pace is unhurried.

What it asks of you: Twenty episodes of roughly seventy minutes, a few weekends of commitment; attention goes to shifting alliances and quiet manoeuvring, so you must keep track of the chess game.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo2016

A modern woman navigates Goryeo court politics through romance and strategy, much like Pyung Kang's ruthless climb. Same intoxicating blend of historical sweep, costume beauty, and characters using each other while falling anyway.

But The time-travel premise feels tacked on, and the pacing stumbles in the middle. Prepare for 20 episodes when the story feels like it could breathe in 16.

Mr. Sunshine2018

Epic Korean historical drama set during Japanese occupation, equally invested in personal ambition amid political collapse. Characters scheme, seduce, and sacrifice with the same moral complexity Pyung Kang embodies.

But At 25 episodes, it's a genuine commitment. The scope can feel melodramatic if you're not in the mood for that register.

Alchemy of Souls2022

High-fantasy romance with a resourceful female lead who manipulates circumstances and hearts to survive. The same chemistry between ambition and affection, but with magic systems instead of throne rooms.

But It pivots toward action-adventure spectacle. If you're here for the political scheming, the second half trades that for sword fights.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Under the Bridge2024

Both explore female characters who are simultaneously victims and architects of their own circumstances. Both refuse easy moral judgment and ask the viewer to sit with uncomfortable complexity.

A contemporary North American true-crime story, radically different in setting and tone, but animated by the same question: what does ambition cost, and what do we become in pursuit of it? A woman's agency and manipulation examined without sentimentality.

But It's dark, contemporary, and grounded in real tragedy rather than historical romance. Tonally the opposite of what you expect, and genuinely upsetting in places.

The Apothecary Diaries2023

A woman uses intellect and insider knowledge to navigate a rigid imperial system. Slower-burn than Pyung Kang, but equally focused on a sharp protagonist surviving through wit and leverage.

But It's deliberately paced and meditative. There's little of the romantic turbulence that drives River Where the Moon Rises.

Legend2015

Another Goguryeo folktale adaptation with costume grandeur and warring factions. If you loved the historical setting itself, this scratches that same itch with different characters.

But It skews even more toward romance and away from intrigue. Less scheming, more sighing.

The Empress of China2014

A woman rises from concubine to empress through intelligence and strategic romance. Sprawling, gorgeous, and utterly committed to its protagonist's unapologetic hunger for power.

But It's 81 episodes. Even fans will admit there's padding. Approach as a series to live in, not a story to rush through.

Love in the Moonlight2016

A prince and a girl from humble origins navigate court politics and hidden identity. Lighter than Pyung Kang but with the same period beauty and the pleasure of watching smart people outsmart each other.

But The tone is considerably sunnier. If you want the moral complexity and darkness Pyung Kang carries, this will feel lighter than you're looking for.
