Film
Copycat
A sharp thriller that pairs an agoraphobic criminal psychologist with a streetwise detective hunting a killer who recreates famous crimes. Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter crackle together, and the film finds genuine tension in both the procedural hunt and the cat-and-mouse games between fractured minds. Smart, stylish 90s crime cinema.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy a crime story built on clever, talky standoffs between two sharp women, where the pleasure is in watching one brilliant mind out-think another from a single room.
Skip it if you want something quick and breezy, since this is a grim, deliberate chase through copycat murders that lingers on the victims and rarely lets up.
What it asks of you: Expect a long, unhurried two hours that trades jump scares for slow dread, with much of the tension built through conversation and cramped rooms rather than action.

Se7en1995
The definitive serial killer thriller. Meticulous, dread-soaked, and built on the same moral architecture: detectives pursuing someone operating by a twisted personal logic, with each crime a statement.
But Relentlessly bleak and graphic. It wears the darkness like a second skin, and the final act is designed to wreck you.

The Silence of the Lambs1991
The template that everything after learned from. An FBI profiler hunts a serial killer by entering the mind of another, more brilliant one. The interplay between hunter and hunted is electric.
But Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal has been imitated to death since. The novelty of that character is gone, though the film itself is still formidable.

The Fugitive1993
A cat-and-mouse thriller with two perfectly matched leads and storytelling that never lets the pedal off. Taut, intelligent, and absolutely gripping from start to finish.
But The famous one-armed man twist is known to everyone by now. The pleasure here is in the execution, not surprise.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Zodiac2007
Both films understand that the real story isn't catching the killer—it's the psychological spiral that obsession creates in the people hunting them.
David Fincher's obsessive masterwork about the hunt for a killer told across decades. Like Copycat, it's built on the mutual corruption between hunter and hunted—both the obsessed cop and the elusive criminal are shaped by their pursuit of each other.
But At 158 minutes, it's a slow burn about paperwork and frustration. The killer is barely in it. If you want action, this will feel like sitting in an archive.

Kiss the Girls1997
A pair of strong leads hunting a serial killer with boxes of a thriller wrapped tight. Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman make you believe in their partnership, and the plot moves like water.
But It inhabits the same space as a dozen other 90s crime thrillers. It's good, not distinctive, and feels a bit like comfort food.

The Bone Collector1999
Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie as a paralyzed detective and his field partner hunting a killer who leaves forensic puzzles. The dynamic is clever, the crimes meticulously staged.
But It's a by-the-numbers thriller in a world full of them. A solid evening's entertainment that you'll forget inside a week.

Mindhunters2004
An FBI profiling unit trapped on an island with a killer among them. The locked-room aspect adds genuine paranoia, and the execution is sleek and assured.
But It's more style than substance, and the twist ending requires you to have not been paying close attention to the actual evidence.

The Suspect2013
A lean, gripping French thriller about the hunt for a serial killer, built on misdirection and shifting perspective. Genuinely surprising in its turns.
But It's in French with subtitles. The pacing is deliberate rather than breakneck, which can feel slow if you're not in the right headspace.

Insomnia2002
An insomniac cop, a killer who knows more than he should, and a town where nobody sleeps quite right. Christopher Nolan's remake of the Norwegian original, with Al Pacino and Robin Williams in perfect moral opposition.
But It's a remake of a film most people haven't seen, which means it lacks the cultural foothold of the original. Some find it airless.

Morphine2008
A Russian crime thriller about addiction, corruption, and the blurred lines between cop and criminal. Visually distinct and morally complicated in ways American thrillers rarely attempt.
But It's Russian, it's subtitled, and it dwells in moral ambiguity without offering comfort. Some will find it bleak and self-indulgent.

Memories of Murder2003
Both films centre on brilliant women or complex characters forced to work within broken systems. Both understand that the real villain is often the machinery itself.
A South Korean masterpiece where detectives hunt a serial killer in a rural area during political upheaval. It's a crime thriller that's also a portrait of institutional failure and the desperation of men who can't solve anything.
But It's subtitled, nearly two and a half hours, and deliberately ambiguous. Some viewers want closure; this film denies it. The corruption and brutality can be hard to sit with.

The Fourth Kind2009
Like Copycat, it's about a psychologist piecing together patterns that others dismiss, and discovering that the real terror lives in what we refuse to see. Both films trust their audience to stay with irrational evidence.
A small-town psychologist in Alaska uncovers a pattern of alien abductions hidden under her patients' trauma. It's shot as a found-footage mockumentary woven with dramatized scenes, and it's genuinely unsettling—the real horror is how easily pathology can be misdiagnosed.
But It's about UFOs, which will make half the room check out instantly. The shaky camera work and fractured narrative structure will frustrate viewers who just want a straight story. And the scares rely on you accepting the premise.
