Three childhood friends, one dead daughter, and a working-class Boston neighbourhood that never really let any of them leave. It's less whodunit than a study in guilt, grief and the violence men do to protect what they've already lost. Bleak, brilliant, unhurried.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a slow, morally tangled crime story where character and grief matter as much as the mystery, and you're happy to sit with heavy performances from its three leads.

Skip it if you need brisk plotting or a clear-cut whodunit, since this lingers in its characters' sorrow and moves at a funeral's pace for most of its 138 minutes.

What it asks of you: Expect a long, unhurried watch that keeps its grip through dark material and rewards close attention rather than a tidy puzzle to solve.

Same structural engine — a crime against a child forces a town to confront guilt it's spent years pretending not to have — but stretched into a miniseries lets the dread build room to breathe that a two-hour film can't give it.

Jane Campion's miniseries trades Boston for a New Zealand lake town but keeps the slow unraveling of a community's buried violence around a missing girl. Elisabeth Moss is extraordinary.

But Six hours is a bigger commitment, and its second season is weaker — stop after the first if it doesn't hook you.

Sleepers1996

Childhood friends bound by a shared trauma, adulthood spent orbiting the damage. It's pulpier than Mystic River but chases the same wound.

But Leans melodramatic and courtroom-heavy where Mystic River stays quiet; the tone is broader.

In the Bedroom2001

A quiet, devastating study of parents deciding what to do with grief and rage after losing a child. Same slow-burn dread, same moral weight.

But Almost unbearably restrained — no catharsis, no release, just consequence.

The Town2010

Another Boston neighbourhood you can't escape, another man trying to outrun what he was raised into. More heist thriller than tragedy, but the DNA is close.

But Slicker and more conventionally entertaining — it wants to be a crowd-pleaser, which Mystic River never did.

A Simple Plan1998

Friends, a secret, and the slow poisonous unraveling of trust. Snowbound instead of riverbound, but the same idea that good men rot from one bad decision.

But Colder and more procedural about guilt; less interested in emotional catharsis.

Zodiac2007

An obsessive, meticulous look at what an unsolved crime does to the men chasing it. Fincher's patience matches Eastwood's, even if the case itself never closes.

But Nearly three hours long and deliberately anticlimactic — it's about obsession, not resolution.

A tighter, stagier piece about certainty, suspicion and what a community decides to believe about one of its own. Great actors doing careful, controlled work.

But Very theatrical and dialogue-driven; if you want atmosphere over argument, it may feel stiff.

In Cold Blood1967

Made decades before Mystic River but asking the same question: what does one act of violence permanently do to the ordinary people standing near it, and can a community's innocence ever actually come back.

Richard Brooks' stark black-and-white true-crime film, based on Capote's book, watches a real murder detonate a small Kansas community's sense of itself. Cold, formal, unforgettable.

But Deliberately clinical and distanced — it withholds warmth on purpose, which some viewers find alienating.

Cape Fear1991

Same primal nerve as Mystic River — a father's fear that violence from the past will come back for his family — played at maximum pulpy volume instead of Eastwood's hushed restraint, proving the same fear works in a completely different register.

Scorsese's lurid, operatic remake about a man trying to protect his family from a predator from the past. Robert De Niro is terrifying and the whole thing is gloriously overcooked.

But It's trashy on purpose — thunderstorms, screaming, a villain who quotes scripture. Nothing subtle about it.
