Three Billboards is a rural-American revenge drama that keeps swerving between grief, farce and sudden violence — McDonagh's signature tonal whiplash. It's angry, profane, unexpectedly tender, and refuses to let anyone off easy, hero or villain. Anchored by McDormand's steel and Rockwell's mess of a man edging toward decency. For anyone who prefers moral messiness to neat resolution, and doesn't need every character redeemed.

McDonagh's earlier film has the same collision of grief, guilt and pitch-black comedy, just transplanted to two hitmen hiding out in a fairy-tale Belgian town. Same voice, same willingness to laugh right before it breaks your heart.

But More farcical and profane than Three Billboards, with a body count and a subplot some find tasteless rather than funny.

Small-town crime, deadpan violence, and ordinary people doing terrible things under gray Midwestern skies — it's the closest thing on television to McDonagh's tonal tightrope, season after season.

But Anthology format means starting over with new characters each season; some entries land harder than others.

A child's death fractures a tight-knit community and turns neighbours into suspects, with the same slow-burn fury and moral murk that drives Mildred's crusade — grief curdling into something dangerous.

But Far heavier and more grim throughout; there's little of the dark comedy that leavens Three Billboards' anger.

Both are studies of a mother whose grief and disbelief in the system curdle into a one-woman investigation that terrifies the people around her — Bong Joon-ho just pushes the melodrama and moral rot further than McDonagh dares.

A devoted mother refuses to accept the police's verdict on her son's case and starts her own investigation, no matter how far it takes her — Mildred's fury dialed into something colder and more disturbing.

But Subtitled and slower-burning, with a final turn considerably darker; the moral ground shifts in ways that aren't played for laughs at all.

Dusty small-town Texas, a lawman nearing retirement, and desperate people pushed past the point of legality — it shares the same weary, sunbaked sense that institutions have failed everyone involved.

But Less interested in verbal fireworks than McDonagh; it's a quieter, more contained heist-thriller than a character explosion.

For the grief underneath all Mildred's rage — this is what that same wound looks like without the billboards, the vigilante streak, or the jokes. Devastating, patient, precisely acted.

But No plot momentum to speak of and almost no comic relief; it sits with pain rather than fighting it.

But Bleaker and more austere, with none of Three Billboards' verbal wit to cut the tension.

But Plays it straight as a thriller, with far less comedy and more overt violence than McDonagh's film.

McDormand again, stripped of Mildred's fury, playing a woman adrift after loss across the American West — a quieter companion piece about what's left when the fight is over.

But Almost plotless and meditative; if you want more drama and confrontation, this will feel slow.

Two women in a struggling border town make increasingly desperate, illegal choices to protect their families — the same unglamorous, hard-edged portrait of working-class women pushed to extremes.

But Low-budget and slow-paced, without the sharp dialogue or dark humour that makes McDonagh's film sing.

Bad Day at Black Rock1955

Same structural engine — one determined outsider forcing a complicit small town to confront a truth it has buried — decades before McDonagh dressed it up with billboards and profanity.

A one-armed stranger arrives in a hostile Western town asking uncomfortable questions nobody wants answered, and the whole community closes ranks against him — a lean, furious precursor to Mildred's standoff.

But Black-and-white, 81 minutes, and a very different era's pacing and dialogue; some will find it stagey next to McDonagh's modern rhythms.

The Thin Blue Line1988

It's the true-crime, unadorned version of Mildred's accusation: what actually happens when a police department gets the story wrong and digs in rather than admitting it.

Errol Morris's landmark documentary reconstructs a real wrongful murder conviction, exposing exactly the kind of police laziness, tunnel vision and institutional face-saving that Three Billboards turns into satire.

But No comic relief, no fictional catharsis — this is real injustice with no tidy ending, and Morris's stylised recreations can feel clinical rather than warm.
