The Death of Dick Long
A pitch-black comedy about three working-class men in rural Alabama scrambling to cover up a death that nobody was supposed to know about. It's tense and funny in equal measure, mining dark humor from small-town gossip and the chaos of a bad situation getting worse. For people who like their comedies morally messy and their dramas unexpectedly hilarious.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy dark comedy that treats bad decisions with straight-faced seriousness, where the laughs come from characters digging themselves deeper while trying to look calm.
Skip it if you need brisk plotting or broad gags, since its humor is dry, awkward and often uncomfortable rather than jokey, and it never rushes to reassure you.
What it asks of you: A lean hundred minutes, where awkward silences are allowed to sit and tension builds in ordinary rooms, and fast cuts are rare.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri2017
Southern gothic with real teeth—funny and furious about injustice, grief, and how communities tear themselves apart. Strong ensemble cast doing their best work.
But Can feel heavy-handed about its moral positions. Some viewers find the tonal shifts jarring or the protagonist's methods uncomfortable to root for.

Hell or High Water2016
Taut crime drama set in rural Texas with dark humor running through it. Two small-time criminals, mounting chaos, and a landscape that feels like a character itself. Keeps you guessing.
But Deliberately paced in ways that demand patience. If you want constant momentum, this will feel slow in sections.

The White Lotus2021
Ensemble of flawed people in confined spaces, each episode peeling back another layer of chaos and complicity. Darkly comedic and genuinely unsettling. Each season reinvents itself.
But Deeply cynical worldview that can feel punishing after a while. Some find the comedy mean-spirited rather than cathartic.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Wolf of Snow Hollow2020
Both use genre as a Trojan horse for exploring male shame and small-town desperation. The supernatural is secondary to what these men won't admit about themselves.
A small-town cop thriller that's also a werewolf movie—but the real horror is alcoholism, isolation, and male rage. Scarier and funnier than it has any right to be. Jim Cummings is magnetic.
But Mixing horror-comedy with genuine family trauma is a tonal gamble that doesn't always land. Some viewers want either the monster movie or the drama, not both.

Fargo1996
The template for dark Midwest crime comedy. Small-town desperation, escalating violence, and moments of genuine warmth amid the carnage. Holds up perfectly.
But The accents are a commitment. Some find it quaint compared to modern crime dramas, though that's part of its charm.

Bloodhounds of Broadway1989
Ensemble crime comedy that doesn't take itself seriously. Fast-paced, weird, full of New York characters colliding. Less polished than Fargo but more chaotic fun.
But Aggressively of its era in ways that haven't aged smoothly. Feels slight compared to grittier crime work.

Cherry2021
Small-town boy spirals into addiction and crime in ways both tragic and absurd. Tom Holland doing dramatic work without winking at the camera. Raw and unsentimental.
But Tonal whiplash between comedy and real trauma can feel disrespectful to addiction as a subject. Some scenes are genuinely hard to watch.

In Bruges2008
Two hitmen hiding in a medieval town, processing guilt through gallows humor. Beautifully written, genuinely moving beneath the jokes. Colin Farrell at his best.
But Can feel self-consciously literary. If you don't connect with the philosophical asides, the pacing will feel glacial.

Ozark2017
Midwest crime family drama with genuine dread underneath. Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as a couple adapting to impossible circumstances. Addictive plotting across four seasons.
But Later seasons lose focus chasing spectacle over character. Requires a heavy commitment and doesn't always pay off the setup.

Killing Zoe1993
Stylish indie crime film about a drifter caught in a bank heist gone wrong. Roger Avary's debut has style to burn and real chaos underneath the aesthetics.
But Deliberately opaque about character motivation. If you need clear plot logic, this will frustrate you. Feels dated in specific ways.

Buster1988
Both find pathos in regular guys who've done terrible things and are now stuck living with it. The coverage-up is secondary to the human wreckage.
Phil Collins stars as a Great Train Robber in 1960s England, and the film is bizarrely earnest about his humanity and family bonds. A crime comedy that treats its criminal with unexpected dignity and heartbreak.
But Phil Collins. The film is sincere in ways that feel ridiculous on its face. Terrible pop ballad on the soundtrack. Genuinely hard to take seriously.

Climax2018
The catastrophic domino effect of a single incident unraveling a community. Noé fragments narrative the way Dick Long's incident fragments the lives around it—everything breaks at once and nobody can control it.
French body-horror nightmare about dancers whose sangria gets spiked with LSD. Gaspar Noé at his most unhinged—visceral, impossible to look away from, completely its own thing. No plot, pure sensation and chaos.
But Deliberately incoherent in the second half. Graphic sexual violence and body mutilation. In French with subtitles. This is not a comfort watch.
