Martin McDonagh's script swings from slapstick to genuine anguish in the space of a sentence, and Farrell and Gleeson make the whiplash feel human rather than gimmicky. Funny, sad, violent, oddly tender — for anyone who likes their comedy with real stakes.

Seven Psychopaths2012

McDonagh's follow-up doubles down on the same voice: profane, structurally playful, weirdly moral underneath the carnage. If you loved the rhythm of In Bruges's dialogue, this scratches that exact itch.

But Messier and more self-aware than In Bruges — the meta-jokes about screenwriting won't land for everyone.

The Guard2011

Gleeson again, this time as a corrupt small-town Irish cop paired with an FBI agent, written and directed by McDonagh's brother John Michael. Same dry, foul-mouthed warmth, different genre entirely.

But Slower and shaggier than a straight crime thriller — it's more character study than plot machine.

Sexy Beast2001

A retired gangster dragged back for one last job, with Ben Kingsley terrifying and Ray Winstone quietly devastating. British crime cinema at its most stylish and psychologically sharp.

But Heavier on menace than laughs — the comedy is drier and the violence lands harder.

Calvary2014

Written and directed by McDonagh's brother John Michael, starring the same Gleeson, it's the serious mirror image of In Bruges — same actor, same preoccupation with guilt and mortality, but played entirely straight.

Brendan Gleeson plays a priest given a week to live after a death threat, walking through a small Irish town confronting guilt, faith and violence with almost no jokes at all.

But It is genuinely bleak — this strips away nearly all the comedy, leaving raw grief and moral reckoning exposed.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang2005

Robert Downey Jr. as a small-time crook mistaken for an actor mistaken for a detective — a noir spoof with the same rapid-fire, self-aware wit and sudden bursts of real danger.

But More farcical and less emotionally grounded; it's a puzzle-box comedy first, a character piece second.

The Nice Guys2016

Shane Black's buddy-comedy engine, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling bickering their way through a genuinely twisty 70s mystery. Big laughs, real bruises, and a script that respects its own plot.

But Broader and more Hollywood-slick — less interested in guilt or interiority than In Bruges.

Grosse Pointe Blank1997

John Cusack's hitman goes to his high school reunion and has a small existential crisis. The tone — funny people doing terrible jobs while thinking too much about it — is a direct cousin.

But Nineties soundtrack and rom-com structure make it gentler and less formally daring than McDonagh's film.

A Fish Called Wanda1988

A jewel heist unravels into farce among double-crossing crooks who are all much dumber than they think. Pure, escalating British silliness with a surprisingly cruel streak underneath.

But Broader slapstick, no moral weight to speak of — this is comedy first and last.

Fargo1996

The Coens' template for tragedy played completely straight-faced, incompetent criminals spiraling into horror against a backdrop of politeness. If In Bruges's mix of dread and comedy appealed, this is the source code.

But Colder and bleaker in tone; the humour is driest of the drily deadpan, an acquired taste.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels1998

Guy Ritchie's breakout: London wide boys, a card debt, and chaos multiplying with gleeful, profane energy. Loud where In Bruges is wistful, but built from the same DNA of criminals talking themselves into trouble.

But Style over substance — flashier editing and shallower characters than McDonagh gives you.

Waltz with Bashir2008

Swap the fictional hitman's remorse for a real soldier's buried guilt over violence he enabled: same moral engine of a man forced to finally look at what he did, rendered in an entirely different medium and register.

An animated documentary in which a former Israeli soldier interviews fellow veterans, piecing together suppressed memories of the 1982 Lebanon War massacre they were complicit in.

But It's a real-world reckoning with atrocity, not fiction — heavier, slower, and without any comic relief.

The Trouble with Harry1955

Fifty years before McDonagh, Hitchcock found the same joke — death treated as a logistical inconvenience amid quaint scenery — proving the corpse-in-a-pretty-town formula is older than you'd guess.

Hitchcock's rarely-mentioned black comedy: a body keeps turning up in a quaint New England town and nobody quite knows what to do with it, so everyone just carries on, awkwardly, murderously polite.

But Very much a 1950s comedy of manners — slow, stagey, and gentle by modern standards of dark comedy.
