I Went Down
A freshly released Irish lad gets tangled with the mob and must hunt down a debt-dodger across Cork with his volatile partner Bunny. It's a crime caper that moves like a sprint, mixing violence with the absurdist humour of two incompetent hoods trying to do an impossible job. Snappy, clever, propelled by genuine character chemistry and an ear for dialogue that crackles.

In Bruges2008
Two hitmen hide in a medieval Belgian city after a job goes wrong. Like I Went Down, it's a crime film that finds tragedy and dark comedy in the same moment, with dialogue that rewards your attention and a genuine moral weight underneath the banter.
But Heavily stylized and self-aware in ways that can feel mannered. The pace is leisurely compared to I Went Down's forward momentum.

Four Rooms1995
A night porter and a bellhop spin through absurd chaos in a decadent hotel. It has that same sense of regular people trapped in escalating situations not of their making, with great comedic timing and a scrappy energy that refuses to settle.
But Relentlessly wacky. The humour is broader and lands unevenly, and it can feel exhausting rather than energizing.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang2005
A small-time crook stumbles into Hollywood's underworld. It shares I Went Down's mix of noir trappings with genuine character development, snappy dialogue that sounds like people actually talking, and an affection for its flawed protagonists.
But The narrator is constantly breaking the fourth wall and explaining things. Some find it clever; others find it irritating and self-indulgent.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Quiet Girl2022
Both films understand Irish character and speech as their engine, and both hide a serious moral reckoning inside their surface texture.
A neglected Irish girl is fostered by a quiet family in the Gaeltacht and begins to heal and bloom. It shares I Went Down's Irish setting and dialogue musicality, but reverses the energy: instead of male chaos, it's stillness and unspoken connection. Structurally, it's about a secret that transforms everything, just like the Sonny Mulligan mystery does.
But Slow and meditative where I Went Down is brisk. Heavy subject matter (child neglect) means there's real pain underneath. In Irish and English.

The Guard2011
An Irish police officer meets an FBI agent and they partner to take down drug runners. Gleeson stars, and it has the same Irish setting, dry wit, and ability to toggle between genuine stakes and comedy without losing either one.
But Relies heavily on Gleeson's charisma. Without his charm carrying you, the plot is fairly thin.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels1998
A card game debt spirals into a wild night across London with overlapping crews and perfect comic timing. Like I Went Down, it's lean, propulsive, and finds humour in the gap between what criminals intend and what actually happens.
But The rapid-fire ensemble cast and interwoven timelines can be hard to track. The humour is very British laddish in places, which doesn't land for everyone.

Seven Psychopaths2012
A struggling screenwriter gets pulled into a revenge plot involving dog theft and multiple murders. It's playful with genre but also genuinely moving, mixing action and character work the way I Went Down does, just with a darker throughline.
But Violence is sudden and shocking rather than comic. It can feel self-conscious about its own cleverness at times.

Peaky Blinders2013
A family of Birmingham gangsters climb from street thugs to industrial power after WWI. It has the same gritty Irish/British underworld texture and a gift for making you care about morally messy characters trying to outmaneuver each other.
But The first season is somewhat uneven. The pacing and tone stabilize in season two, but that's a commitment to make.

The Banshees of Inisherin2022
Two aging friends on a remote Irish island face the end of their friendship. Gleeson again, and though the tone is darker and sadder than I Went Down, it has the same mastery of dialogue and the way two people can be both comic and tragic at once.
But Bleak and melancholic. There's dark humour but little levity; it asks something heavy of you.

Sexy Beast2001
A retired criminal's peaceful exile in Spain is destroyed by a terrifying visitor. It's a crime film that moves like I Went Down—compressed, intense, character-driven—but filters it through surrealism and stunning cinematography.
But Stylistically odd and sometimes pretentious. The pacing is strange; it can feel glacial or jarring depending on your mood.

The Grifters1990
Both follow protagonists trying to navigate a criminal world they don't fully control, and both examine loyalty and self-preservation in collision.
A con artist, his mother, and his girlfriend circle each other in a noir about people lying for survival. Like I Went Down, it's about regular people trapped in crime they didn't choose, with fantastic dialogue and a ruthless understanding of why people do corrupt things.
But Sexually transgressive in ways that can feel exploitative. The tone is bleak and unforgiving; there's no warmth.

This Is England2007
Both films trust working-class male speech and friendship as their subject, and both show how circumstance and loyalty can pull you into places you don't expect to go.
A bullied working-class boy joins a skinhead gang in Thatcher's Britain and gets drawn into radicalization. It's brutal and angry rather than comic, but shares I Went Down's gift for authentic voice, its focus on male friendship and betrayal, and its refusal to judge characters while showing their damage clearly.
But Violent and deeply uncomfortable. The radicalization arc is disturbing by design. British regional accent takes concentration to follow.
