Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy dry, deadpan British comedy where the humour sits in the timing and the straight faces, and a crime caper is mostly an excuse for character quirks and small, escalating mishaps.

Skip it if you want a brisk modern pace or sharp, fast-cut jokes, since this 1955 film lets its gags breathe and its scenes linger in one cramped house.

What it asks of you: Under ninety-two minutes, it asks for patience with a slow build and an appetite for mannered performances, rewarding the viewer who settles in rather than one hunting for constant punchlines.

Same engine as Ladykillers — a gang of inept crooks plotting a job under cover of a respectable front — but filtered through Italian comedy just three years later, funnier for how completely the heist itself falls apart.

Watch a gang of Roman small-timers plan a break-in with the same mixture of ambition and total incompetence, in the film that gave the world 'a big deal' as a euphemism for a heist that never quite happens.

But Subtitled and shot in a scruffier, more chaotic style — if you want English politeness curdling, this is earthier and looser.

Arsenic and Old Lace1944

Cary Grant discovers his sweet old aunts have a rather morbid hobby, in a farce that shares Ladykillers' trick of hiding murder behind chintz curtains and tea trays.

But Stagier and more frantic — it's adapted from a play and it shows, with everyone shouting a lot.

Fargo1996

The Coens' own spin on criminals undone by an ordinary person they underestimated — here it's a pregnant sheriff instead of a landlady, snow instead of London fog.

But Much colder and more violent than Ladykillers — the comedy sits right next to real brutality.

But It's a children's short with a robot dog — if you need the menace to feel like actual menace, this won't scratch that itch.

The Killing1956

The same year's other heist-gone-wrong film, but stripped of every joke — Kubrick takes the identical premise of a meticulously planned crime undone by one small failure and plays it entirely straight, showing you exactly what Ladykillers is smiling about.

Kubrick's brutal, clock-ticking racetrack heist unravels through the same small human errors that doom Guinness's gang — but here there's no laugh at the end, just consequence.

But Bleak and clinical where Ladykillers is warm and funny — this is the version with all the mercy removed.
