Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love heist stories built like clockwork, where the planning is the pleasure and every small human crack threatens the whole scheme, told in lean, hard-edged black and white.

Skip it if you need likable heroes or a steady warm pulse, since the characters are mostly compromised and the film moves in brisk, cool bursts rather than easing you in.

What it asks of you: About eighty-five minutes, no wasted scenes, and close attention to who is talking to whom, because the plot turns on small betrayals that land quickly and without fanfare.

But Far more graphic and profane; the cool detachment of The Killing curdles into something nastier here.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Kansas City Confidential1952

Same architecture of anonymous specialists and a plan built on secrecy — Kubrick almost certainly knew this film, and you can watch the idea in its earlier, scrappier form.

A B-movie noir that predates The Killing and shares its bones almost exactly — an ex-con mastermind, masked strangers recruited for one job, a plan that depends on nobody knowing anybody else's face.

But Cheaper, pulpier, and far less visually inventive; this is the rough draft, not the finished sculpture.

The Usual Suspects1995

A crew of criminals, a job that goes wrong, and a story assembled backwards from the wreckage — the pleasure is entirely in how the pieces click into place, same as watching Johnny Clay's plan unspool.

But The twist has been so thoroughly spoiled by pop culture that its shock value may already be gone.

Ocean's Eleven2001

Take the same bones — a mastermind, a crew of specialists, a meticulously timed score — and strip out the doom. This is what the heist genre looks like when everyone's actually having fun.

But Glossy and frictionless where The Killing is grimy and fatalistic; almost the opposite mood entirely.

Dog Day Afternoon1975

A robbery that goes sideways almost immediately, turning into a slow, sweaty siege — proof that the genre's real tension often lives in the plan falling apart, not the plan itself.

But Character-driven and talky rather than tightly plotted; don't expect the same clockwork precision.

But Deliberately slow and unglamorous, with non-actors and a near-total absence of music or style.

A lower, sadder register of the same world — small-time crooks, informants, and jobs that were never going to end well, told with unglamorous, lived-in exhaustion rather than Kubrick's icy control.

But Deliberately anti-climactic and downbeat; there's no clever structural trick here, just grim inevitability.

La Casa de Papel2017

It borrows the exact same trick — telling a heist out of chronological order — and the exact same fault line: a lover's carelessness that the perfect plan never accounted for.

A Spanish heist told in the same fractured, jump-around timeline as The Killing, stretched across dozens of hours — the plan is elegant, the crew is disciplined, and one member's personal entanglement threatens to bring the whole thing down.

But Melodramatic and soapy where Kubrick is austere; several seasons long and increasingly baroque as it goes.

A Fish Called Wanda1988

Identical premise — a crew undone by greed and a partner's wandering loyalty — but the register flips from bleak inevitability to slapstick, proving how flexible the heist-gone-wrong structure really is.

Take the same engine — thieves double-crossing thieves after a big score — and run it as farce instead of tragedy. Every betrayal that dooms Johnny Clay's crew happens here too, just played for screaming laughter.

But Broad, silly, and occasionally cruel comedy; if you want more of The Killing's cold dread, this will feel like whiplash.
