Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love banter-driven mysteries where the jokes land as fast as the clues, and a hero's sheer cockiness is half the fun, somewhere in the spirit of Monk.

Skip it if you want crime that feels grounded or grim, since this one plays its cases for laughs and bends logic whenever a gag needs room to breathe.

The other great USA Network detective-comedy, and honestly the show Psych was consciously answering back. Adrian Monk's OCD-fuelled observation skills solve murders while his handlers manage the fallout — same DNA, gentler laughs.

But Monk is slower and sadder underneath the jokes; grief and anxiety sit closer to the surface than Shawn's breezy charm.

White Collar2009

Swap psychic detective for con-man consultant: Neal Caffrey's slick banter with his FBI handler mirrors Shawn and Lassiter's odd-couple energy, wrapped in the same glossy, case-of-the-week comfort.

But Trades Psych's goofiness for actual swagger and romance subplots — less silly, more soap, if that's not your thing.

Castle2009

A crime novelist talks his way into consulting for the NYPD and flirts his way through every case — same wish-fulfilment charm engine as Shawn, just with a badge-flashing detective love interest instead of Gus.

But Leans harder into the will-they-won't-they than Psych ever did, and the mystery plots themselves are thinner.

The Thin Man1934

Psych's whole engine — solve-it-with-style, banter-first detection — is a direct descendant of this 1934 comedy, right down to the wisecracking outsider showing up the professionals.

Before Shawn and Gus, there was Nick and Nora Charles — a married couple who solve murders between martinis, trading quips so fast the plot barely keeps up. This is where comedy-mystery got its blueprint.

But Black-and-white, stagey by modern standards, and the murder itself is almost beside the point next to the chemistry.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine2013

If you loved Psych more for the jokes than the mysteries, this is the purer hit: a precinct full of lovable weirdos, rapid-fire gags, and genuine found-family warmth.

But Barely a procedural at all — the crimes are practically an afterthought to the sketch-comedy energy.

Chuck2007

Swap murder for espionage: an underachieving nerd gets superpowers via a computer downloaded into his brain and drags his best friend into increasingly absurd spy plots. Same lovable-loser charm, same devoted sidekick bromance.

But The spy mythology gets convoluted in later seasons, and the will-they-won't-they occasionally slows the fun down.

Leverage2008

A crew of con artists and hackers pulls off a satisfying caper every week, delivering the same breezy competence-porn pleasure Psych gets from watching Shawn nail the culprit.

But No mystery to solve along with the characters — you watch the heist unfold rather than puzzle it out yourself.

Veronica Mars2004

A teenage private eye with a bruised sense of justice and a bottomless supply of one-liners — sharper and angrier than Shawn, but built from the same noir-comedy parts.

But Season one's central mystery is genuinely dark; the show has real teeth hiding under all the quips.

Due South1994

A ridiculously polite Canadian Mountie partners with a cynical Chicago cop, and the culture-clash bickering plus genuine affection is pure Shawn-and-Lassiter energy, a decade early.

But It's a 90s network procedural through and through — dated effects, slower pacing, and harder to find streaming.

Bones2005

A hyper-logical forensic anthropologist and her instinct-driven FBI partner needle each other through cases, cousin to Shawn and Lassiter's opposites-solve-crimes chemistry, if a touch more earnest.

But Runs long — twelve seasons — and the forensic detail can get considerably grislier than Psych ever goes.

Zodiac2007

Both are fundamentally about people who notice things nobody else does. Psych plays that as a party trick; Zodiac plays the exact same gift as a slow-burning curse.

David Fincher's true-crime procedural turns Shawn's hyper-observation gift inside out: a cartoonist's obsessive eye for detail consumes his life instead of solving crimes with a grin. Meticulous, hypnotic, genuinely unsettling filmmaking.

But It's cold, unresolved, and nearly three hours — the opposite of a comfort watch, and the case famously stays open.
