Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy a cold, precise character study where a single unsettling figure's ambition keeps tightening, and you like thrillers that feel more like sharp satire of ambition than a race for clues.

Skip it if you need someone to root for, since nearly everyone here is morally compromised and the mood stays chilly and bleak for its full two-hour runtime without much warmth to lean on.

What it asks of you: It runs just under two hours at a steady, watchful pace, asking you to sit with discomfort and study a man's unnerving calm rather than be rushed along by action.

Ryan Gosling glides through the same neon-lit LA nights as Lou Bloom, and the film shares Nightcrawler's cool, detached style and moral vacuum at its centre — watch it for the mood, the score, and the quiet menace.

But It's slower and more stylised than plotted; if you wanted Lou's manic energy, this restraint might frustrate you.

Jim Carrey's sincere, panicked everyman trapped inside a manufactured broadcast reality flips Nightcrawler's premise — instead of the predator behind the camera, you get the person being consumed by it.

But It's a much gentler, more whimsical film with a hopeful ending, so don't expect Nightcrawler's queasy nihilism.
