Hyena

Other titles called Hyena: the 2015 film.

Hyena is a sharp Korean legal drama about two ruthless lawyers competing for supremacy and wealth in Seoul's elite legal world. Built on chemistry and moral corruption, it's propulsive and darkly comic—a character study masquerading as a thriller. For anyone who loved the unscrupulous machinations of Better Call Saul but wants something faster, sexier, and less burdened by conscience.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like morally compromised professionals sparring in a corporate-law world where the ethics are slippery, and you enjoy the chill of watching a cold-blooded operator stay magnetic.

Skip it if you need warm, easily likeable heroes, because the central pair are hard-edged operators who stay prickly for most of the run.

What it asks of you: a sixteen-episode commitment at roughly seventy minutes each, so you need to settle in for a long, talky courtroom-and-boardroom ride rather than a quick binge.

If you liked this

Suits2011

Two brilliant lawyers navigate corporate warfare with style and ambition. Sharp dialogue, clever schemes, and the intoxicating appeal of characters who bend every rule. You'll recognize the DNA immediately.

But Harvey and Mike's friendship softens the show's edges; Hyena has no such mercy. If you want heroes you can root for without reservation, this isn't it.

The Good Wife2009

A masterclass in legal drama that balances cases with character. Explores how brilliant women navigate power structures and compromise their values—thematically similar, though American and more measured in tone.

But Moves at a different pace entirely. Where Hyena crackles with appetite, this builds slow and methodical. Much longer commitment too.

Killing Eve2018

Two women locked in a cat-and-mouse game where moral lines dissolve and attraction becomes dangerous. Obsessive, stylish, darkly funny. That same push-pull of rivalry and fascination defines Hyena.

But Killing Eve is about predation and psychopathy. Hyena is about greed and ambition. If you need actual danger rather than financial stakes, this might feel smaller.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Treadstone2019

Both are powered by protagonists whose talent is inseparable from their moral emptiness. The real thriller isn't catching them—it's watching how they think.

Not about law, but about amoral professionals trained to win at any cost—and the psychological profile of people who can compartmentalize and manipulate flawlessly. Same obsessive energy, same fascination with people without limits.

But Spy thriller rather than legal drama. If you specifically want courtroom scenes and contract disputes, this won't deliver them. Cancelled after one season, too.

The Devil's Advocate1997

Keanu Reeves seduced by power and corruption in a legal world controlled by forces that only care about winning. Same moral vertigo, same fascination with how talented people rationalize ruthlessness.

But It's a supernatural thriller dressed as a legal drama. If you want grounded realism, the horror-movie finale will feel like a betrayal.

MINDHUNTER2017

Obsessive professionals consumed by ambition and their work. The same intensity of focus, the same willingness to cross ethical lines to win. Different field, identical psychological profile.

But Completely different tone—methodical, dark, sometimes tedious. If you want snap and seduction, this is too methodical and grim.

Succession2018

Ruthless people fighting for position and wealth, using every advantage. Blackly funny, stylish, and fascinated by how power corrupts. The appetite and amorality mirror Hyena's world exactly.

But Sprawling, American, takes fifteen episodes to hit its stride. Hyena is lean and concentrated; Succession wallows in excess, which is partly the point.

Bodyguard2018

A taut six-part thriller about ambition, secrets, and people playing games at the highest level. British political intensity applied to a security detail. That same sense of everyone being complicit.

But Political paranoia rather than legal maneuvering. If you specifically want courtroom sparring, this takes place elsewhere.

Nightcrawler2014

Jake Gyllenhaal as a man consumed by ambition and devoid of conscience, clawing his way up through Los Angeles. Same fascination with how smart, amoral people weaponize their intelligence to win.

But Bleaker and more claustrophobic. Hyena has style and wit; this is a descent into genuine darkness. Not cathartic, and deliberately suffocating.

The Diplomat2023

Keri Russell navigating elite worlds with intelligence and cunning. Lighter than Hyena but built on similar machinery: brilliant women playing high-stakes games with style and humor.

But Considerably softer. Hyena has teeth and genuine menace; this is more of a fun puzzle. If you want actual stakes and danger, this will feel fluffy by comparison.

A Serious Man2009

Both understand that the legal world is a machine for converting human lives into transactions. Hyena loves the machine; A Serious Man is trapped inside it. Same world, opposite registers.

A Coen Brothers film about a man watching his life spiral while lawyers, rabbis, and fate conspire against him. Darkly comic, philosophically bleak, and obsessed with how systems grind people. Completely different story, identical spiritual terrain.

But Not a thriller. No victories, no schemes that work, no catharsis. If you want satisfaction or closure, this movie actively refuses to give it. Slow-burn frustration rather than propulsive tension.
