Accused

Other titles called Accused: the 1936 film.

Accused is a British drama anthology where each episode centers on a different person awaiting trial, stripping away easy judgment to explore what led them to the dock. It's intimate, morally complicated storytelling that treats the accused with unsettling humanity. For viewers who want crime drama that questions rather than reassures.

TVMaze rating3.5

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like courtroom-adjacent drama that lingers on ordinary people caught in the machinery of justice, where each hour rewards patience with a fresh moral knot to untangle.

Skip it if you want a tidy case-of-the-week procedural with a clear hero, because this one is more interested in doubt and dread than in the satisfaction of a solved puzzle.

What it asks of you: Each episode settles into one defendant's world for the full hour, so expect slow, dialogue-heavy scenes and a steady, unshowy darkness rather than quick cuts.

The Fall2013

Psychological crime drama that gets under the skin of both hunter and hunted. Stella Gibson is a masterclass in controlled intensity, and the cat-and-mouse game with a serial killer is genuinely unsettling without relying on gore.

But Slow-burn plotting that demands patience. Some find the pacing glacial, and the final season divides opinion sharply.

MINDHUNTER2017

An FBI procedural that's actually about the work—interviews, psychology, grinding casework. Beautiful cinematography and writing that respects both the audience and the material. The second season is magnificent.

But Deliberately methodical rather than thrilling. It ends on a cliffhanger that will likely never resolve. Some found it slow even before cancellation.

The Honourable Woman2014

Miniseries about a British-Israeli businesswoman caught in espionage and moral contradiction. Taut, intelligent, and Hugo Blick writes characters who genuinely surprise you. Maggie Gyllenhaal is riveting.

But Plot complexity borders on maze-like. Some viewers found the ending ambiguous to the point of frustration.

Something you would not have found on your own.

An Inspector Calls2015

Both use crime as a lens into complicity. Accused asks who did this. Inspector Calls asks who killed her—the answer is everyone and no one. Both understand that guilt is rarely singular.

J.B. Priestley's 1945 play filmed for BBC with magnificent staging and a brilliantly performed twist. An inspector arrives to investigate a young woman's suicide and each family member is complicit in ways they can't escape. Moral architecture, not mystery.

But It's a stage play. Doesn't move like TV; it builds like rhetoric. Some will find it mannered. Others just want plot.

True Detective2014

Season one is exceptional: two detectives, a sprawling crime, and a deep look at corruption, ambition, and rot. Matthew McConaughey gives one of the best television performances ever.

But Subsequent seasons are uneven. The first season's mood—apocalyptic and hypnotic—is hard to replicate and the show struggles after.

Mare of Easttown2021

Kate Winslet as a small-town detective who doesn't have the luxury of detachment. Murder mystery that's really about grief, failure, and the weight of knowing everyone. Quietly devastating.

But Very bleak. Relentless in its refusal to offer emotional release. Not something you watch to feel better.

Mare of Easttown poster

Broadchurch2013

A child is murdered in a tiny seaside town and suspicion metastasizes through the community. Brilliant casting, excellent pacing, and it understands how small towns turn venomous under pressure.

But Season one is the point; seasons two and three diminish it. The reveal divides viewers on whether it lands or feels arbitrary.

In the Flesh2013

Zombies return home to the small Yorkshire communities that fear them. Genuinely moving exploration of prejudice, belonging, and what we owe to those we've already condemned once. Criminally underseen.

But Only three seasons before cancellation. Tone shifts from horror-comedy to almost unbearably sad. Budget constraints show.

The Killing2011

Danish original where a detective hunts a killer while the investigation itself becomes contamination. Methodical, haunting, and the performance by Sarah Lund is unforgettable. Season one is television at its best.

But Subtitles. Relentless grimness. Later seasons lose the magic of the first. Many viewers bounce off before getting anywhere.

The Killing poster

Luther2010

Idris Elba as a brilliant detective whose obsession costs him everything. Visceral, intelligent, and the first season especially is taut and driven. The cat-and-mouse game with a murderer feels genuinely alive.

But Occasionally strains credibility for drama. Repetitive patterns emerge across seasons. Needs editing.

Blue Valentine2010

Like Accused, it puts you inside the perspective of someone failing to understand how they got here. No narrator, no certainty. Only the slow realization that you're complicit in your own judgment.

A marriage fractures across its whole span. Told in fragments that move between past and present, it's devastating and exact about how love dies. Gosling and Williams give raw, unglamorous performances. It's about the accused being each other.

But Crushingly sad with no redemption. Long scenes of real argument. The chronological jumps can disorient. Not remotely a release.
