Flesh and Blood
Other titles called Flesh and Blood: the 1922 film.
A taut family drama about three adult siblings watching their widowed mother romance a charming stranger—and suspecting he's after her money. It's a masterclass in slow-burn tension, where every glance carries menace and nobody's motives are clean. Perfect for anyone who likes their family drama with a criminal undertone.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like family drama where affection and resentment share a room, and a domestic upheaval carries an undertow of menace that keeps you wary of every calm scene.
Skip it if you want brisk plotting or easy comfort viewing; the sibling sniping and unease can feel slow and uncomfortable if you came for escape.
What it asks of you: Four one-hour episodes make it a quick binge, but it asks patience for awkward silences and people who wound each other kindly.

Bodyguard2018
Jed Mercurio's thriller about protection detail and obsession. Russell Tovey carries the same coiled intensity here; the paranoia that eats at families is structural to both shows. Relentless.
But Once you see the trajectory, the remaining episodes can feel inevitable. The twist has to land perfectly or the whole thing deflates.

Succession2018
Three adult children at war over their parent's affections and money. Same DNA: family loyalty versus self-interest, the way money poisons love, the slow discovery that nobody's blameless. HBO's version is glossier but the moral rot is identical.
But It's a nine-season commitment. If five episodes feel slow to you, this will test your patience.

A Confession2019
Martin Freeman in another Jed Mercurio police drama about guilt, deception, and the distance between what we know and what we can prove. Same writer, same gift for making ordinary people deeply unsettling.
But Based on a real murder investigation—the emotional stakes are different when you know the outcome. Harder to watch.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Last of Us2023
Both ask how far you'll go to protect family, and whether love can justify deception. Both understand that family trauma isn't solved by revelation.
Not about infection—about what people will do to protect the person they love most, and whether that protection is mercy or cruelty. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey navigate the same moral abyss as Vivien and her children. Different genre, identical question about family obligation.
But It's a post-apocalypse show and some episodes are punishing. Heavy themes—loss, sacrifice, the cost of survival. Not light viewing.

Des2020
David Tennant as a serial killer next door. It captures the same horrifying intimacy: the way evil can wear a pleasant face and live in your house. The Imelda Staunton comparison matters—she's in this too, and she's devastating.
But It's relentlessly dark and based on genuine atrocities. Not a palate cleanser. Genuinely disturbing.

The Serpent2021
Javier Bardem-adjacent charm masking a predator. Stranger insinuates himself into a family, money goes missing, nobody can prove anything until everything unravels. The tension of knowing something's wrong and being unable to act on it.
But Eight episodes is a big ask for a con-game story. The middle sags before the payoff.

Unforgotten2015
Nicola Walker investigating a decades-old death. Like Flesh and Blood, it excavates what families hide and how small cruelties compound into something larger. Methodical, intelligent, deeply humane.
But It's a procedural, so you need patience for the forensics. Not visceral the way Flesh and Blood is.

The Innocents2018
Young couple on the run after discovering something impossible about themselves. It has that same creeping dread where you're not sure who to trust and the stakes keep rising. Atmospheric and morally complex.
But It's a slow build and it ends on a cliffhanger that was never resolved. Some people find that infuriating.

Good Omens2019
Neil Gaiman on a smaller, warmer wavelength. Stephen Rea's in this—the cast chemistry and the way it balances menace with humour shows the same actors can work very different registers.
But It's basically the opposite tone of Flesh and Blood. If you want grim, don't go here.

Liar2017
One-night stand accusations; he-said-she-said as narrative engine; a family fractured by someone's word against another's. Imelda Staunton here too. Same gift for showing how quickly trust collapses.
But The second season loses its way. First season is taut; it doesn't sustain the momentum.

Before the Rain1994
Both understand that violence (emotional or literal) isn't sudden—it's a slow contraction of options. Both trap their characters and watch what happens.
Kristin Scott Thomas crosses national borders during the Balkans crisis. Three interlocking stories about war, love, and the impossibility of escape. It has the same claustrophobic inevitability—you sense the ending long before you reach it, and you watch helplessly as people walk toward it anyway.
But It's European art-house cinema from the 90s. If you need plot momentum and dialogue, this moves at its own pace. Subtitles required.

MINDHUNTER2017
Both are fascinated by the psychology of manipulation—how someone talks their way into a position where they can hurt others. How intent hides behind politeness.
David Fincher's take on the FBI's first attempt to profile serial killers. What makes this relevant to Flesh and Blood is the deep interest in how ordinary people think like predators, and how to see the fracture in someone's reasoning before they act. Methodical, cerebral, absorbing.
But It was cancelled on cliffhanger. If narrative resolution matters to you, this will frustrate you. Also slower than its premise promises.
