Unforgotten is British crime procedural at its most humane: a decades-old murder resurfaces, and the show patiently reassembles the lives it will wreck. Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar anchor it with warmth rather than swagger. It's slow-burn, character-first, and more interested in guilt's slow leak than in shootouts. For anyone who wants grief handled with intelligence.

A small coastal town is shattered by one murder, and the investigation slowly implicates half the community — exactly Unforgotten's trick of turning ordinary neighbours into suspects, driven by David Tennant and Olivia Colman's quietly devastating performances.

But Later seasons lean into soapier melodrama and courtroom theatrics that feel more sensational than Unforgotten's careful restraint.

Sarah Lancashire's Catherine Cawood is another exhausted, morally serious woman policing a community she loves, more interested in aftermath and consequence than in flashy detective work — the same unglamorous integrity Cassie Stuart brings to every case.

But Much more violent and sustained in its dread, with less puzzle-box mystery and more visceral, unrelenting menace throughout.

Line of Duty2012

Same appetite for patient, methodical reveals and moral grey areas, though the machinery here is police corruption rather than a decades-old victim's grief — gripping, meticulous, and just as addictive an unraveling.

But Denser and more plot-mechanical, with jargon-heavy procedure and less of Unforgotten's emotional intimacy with victims' families.

Both structure their mystery as a widening net of ordinary people each concealing something connected to the death — Unforgotten mourns that structure, Knives Out delights in it.

A gloriously fun, whip-smart mystery where one death sends ripples through an entire family, each member hiding a piece of the truth — same engine as Unforgotten, but turbocharged into pure, delicious entertainment.

But It's a comedy at heart, playing the mystery for delight and twists rather than Unforgotten's slow emotional gravity.

A cosy but sharp British procedural with an unglamorous, deeply humane lead who cares more about the people left behind than about theatrics or twists — comfort viewing with real heart.

But Episodic rather than serialized, with lower emotional stakes — comfort food, not the slow-burn tragedy Unforgotten builds toward.

But Younger, glossier, and more procedural in its mechanics — it wants to entertain more than it wants to devastate you.

Prime Suspect1991

Unforgotten's whole lineage runs back to Jane Tennison — both insist a woman leading murder cases has to fight the room as hard as she fights the crime.

The show that essentially invented the mould Cassie Stuart works in: a brilliant, exhausted female detective fighting institutional contempt as hard as she fights the case itself, decades before it was fashionable.

But Rougher and more overtly combative, more interested in the detective's own battles than in the grief of victims' families.

The Keepers2017

Same premise with fiction's safety net removed: a buried crime slowly exposing an entire community's complicity — except this one actually happened, and nobody wrote the ending.

A real decades-old cold case unravels exactly the way Unforgotten's fictional ones do — old friends, colleagues and institutions slowly forced to confront what they've spent a lifetime burying.

But No neat resolution and no fictional distance to soften it — this is real, unresolved grief, and it sits heavier for it.
