Television series
The Northumbria Mysteries
A BBC crime drama pairing a brilliant but aloof detective with a blue-collar local man haunted by his own failures. Set in Northumberland, it's an odd-couple mystery show that trades on character chemistry and regional texture rather than procedural formula. For viewers who want their crime stories grounded in real friction and believable people.

Vera2011
Robson Green's spiritual predecessor: a curmudgeonly detective solving crimes across the Northeast with wry humour, intuition, and deep knowledge of the region. The landscape is almost a character itself.
But Vera runs to 45+ episodes across many seasons. You're committing to watching one woman's wardrobe and detective methods for years.

Cagney & Lacey1982
The original odd-couple cop show: an intellectual and a street-smart partner who drive each other up the wall but crack cases together. Invented the template this series is clearly following.
But It's 1980s television. The production values have aged, and some storylines feel dated even accounting for the era.

Bodyguard2018
BBC thriller with Liz White (Rose) in a compelling supporting role. Taut plotting, moral ambiguity, and the kind of UK character drama that rewards your attention every single episode.
But Bodyguard is relentlessly dark and tense. It does not offer comfort viewing or easy resolutions.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Bottoms2023
Both pair working-class survival instinct with intellect as the engine of the story. Both find humour in the friction between how people actually behave and how society expects them to.
A high school revenge comedy shot in earnest, lived-in detail. Two girls weaponise masculinity studies into absolutely ridiculous consequences. Hilarious, weird, and genuinely moving about female friendship and survival.
But Bottoms is aggressively vulgar and formally bizarre. It loves its own strangeness and won't soften itself for comfort. Also only features queer women—if you're looking for male leads, keep moving.

Line of Duty2012
Intricate crime procedural centred on character dynamics and regional detail. Uses interrogation scenes and moral complexity the way other shows use car chases.
But Line of Duty became a phenomenon that eventually overshadowed the actual storytelling. Later seasons feel like they're performing for obsessive fans rather than telling a story.

Happy Valley2014
Sarah Lancashire leads a northern crime drama built on character, landscape, and the weight of accumulated trauma. Smart, funny, brutal, and utterly human.
But It's extremely dark. The show does not flinch from depicting violence and its consequences. Some episodes carry real weight.

Unforgotten2015
Each series opens a cold case and follows multiple timelines and interconnected lives. Nicola Walker is brilliant, and the writing trusts you to follow intricate threads without spoon-feeding.
But The pacing is deliberately slow. If you need immediate resolution and constant action, this will feel stately and patient to the point of frustration.

The Fall2013
Gillian Anderson as a detective chasing a killer through Belfast. Psychologically complex, visually stunning, and driven entirely by the cat-and-mouse dynamic between two brilliant people.
But The Fall is more interested in atmosphere and character than plot momentum. Some viewers find it glacial; others find that glacial pacing is the whole point.

Broadchurch2013
A small coastal community torn apart by the murder of a child. David Tennant and Olivia Colman as detectives at odds. Claustrophobic, beautifully shot, genuinely unsettling.
But Broadchurch became a cultural phenomenon and was remade immediately. Knowing the ending takes away a lot of its power.

Columbo1968
The granddad of all odd-couple procedurals. Peter Falk as a bumbling detective who's actually brilliant. The chemistry between Columbo and his suspects drives every episode.
But Columbo follows the same formula relentlessly. Once you understand how the trick works, the show can feel repetitive.

The Ballad of Little Jo1993
Like Joe Ruby, its protagonist is a person shaped by regret and necessary reinvention, surviving through intelligence and adaptability in a landscape that doesn't make room for them. Both stories honour people the world overlooks.
A woman passes as a man in the Old West to survive. Maggie Sinclair's performance is quiet, observant, and devastating. Shot in high deserts and small towns, it finds humanity in margins and silences.
But It's a 1993 independent film with a slow burn and an unconventional narrative structure. Production is deliberate rather than slick. It demands patience and active watching.
