Television series
Silent Witness
Silent Witness follows a team of forensic pathologists who investigate murders through evidence the dead leave behind. It's procedural but character-driven, balancing meticulous lab work with the emotional weight of giving voice to victims. For those who love crime drama with genuine scientific rigour and no shortcuts taken.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy patient, methodical detective work where answers come from the autopsy table, and a long-running show that has settled into a comfortable, familiar rhythm.
Skip it if you want fast, twisty thrillers; with 268 episodes over an hour each, the pace is unhurried and the post-mortem detail can be grim.
What it asks of you: An hour at a time, with steady attention to procedure and a measured, deliberate tone that prefers patience to a rush.

Midsomer Murders1998
A British detective series with the same unhurried pacing and small-town darkness. Every episode is a proper puzzle, and the sense of place matters as much as the plot twists do.
But It's extremely prolific and can feel samey if you binge hard. Some find the lead character grating over time.

MINDHUNTER2017
Forensic drama with real bite. The early seasons nail the obsessive, meticulous mindset of investigators building profiles. Morally complicated and gripping.
But It gets darker and more brutal as it goes. The Netflix cancellation left threads hanging that gnaw at you.

The Fall2013
Cat-and-mouse with a serial killer that prioritizes atmosphere over cheap shocks. Stella Gibson is one of television's great detectives: methodical, human, unflinching.
But Takes its time building dread. If you need action beats every five minutes, this will feel slow.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Vera2011
Both centre on investigators who read crime scenes as biography—not just mechanics, but stories only the dead can tell. The detail is the character.
A detective who interrogates forensic evidence like a sacred text. The twist is that the procedural detail isn't window dressing—it's what lets Vera see what others miss. Brenda Blethyn carries it.
But The show is uneven; some cases crackle and others plod. Vera herself can dominate in ways that leave other characters thin.

Broadchurch2013
A small town unravels when a child is murdered. The forensic and procedural detail grounds the emotional devastation. David Tennant delivers a masterclass in playing someone breaking apart.
But The first series is brilliant; the sequels diminish. And the show won't let you look away from complicity and human weakness.

Body of Proof2011
A medical examiner returns to the morgue after a career-ending injury. Good ensemble chemistry and real autopsy procedure details. It's lighter than Silent Witness but earnest.
But Cancelled after three seasons. The formula can feel formulaic if you're watching back-to-back episodes.

Lucifer2016
A supernatural detective procedural with charm and heart. Works best if you enjoy character banter alongside the case-of-the-week structure and genuinely inventive twists.
But The gimmick wears thin if you don't buy into the central conceit. Later seasons get increasingly convoluted.

The Killing2011
Danish noir that spawned imitators for good reason. Methodical, bleak, and committed to the idea that solving a murder changes nothing and everything. Superb cinematography.
But Three seasons and it goes places that feel punitive. The darkness is relentless. Subtitles or dubbing, depending on preference.

Anatomy of a Murder1959
Both understand that forensic work and legal investigation are about reading the same story from different angles. Evidence doesn't speak for itself—it requires interpretation.
A courtroom drama that respects the audience's intelligence and the law's complexity. Deals with evidence, procedure, and the slipperiness of truth. Beautifully shot in black and white.
But It's a 1950s film and feels like one. Nearly three hours long. Some will find the pacing glacial.
