Sorjonen

A brilliantly damaged Finnish detective moves his family to a sleepy lakeside town for peace, only to find it's the epicenter of something far darker. Sorjonen is methodical, atmospheric crime drama that trusts you to sit with dread and ambiguity. It's for people who want their mysteries genuinely unsettling, not neatly solved.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like slow-burn Nordic crime where the investigation is threaded through a marriage and a family's everyday worries, and you don't mind a case lingering across episodes.

Skip it if you want a tight, self-contained case each week, since this one stretches its mysteries over long arcs and spends plenty of time on quiet domestic scenes.

What it asks of you: Around fifty-nine minutes an episode over thirty-one episodes, it moves at a patient pace and needs your full attention through its quiet stretches rather than background viewing.

The Killing2011

Serialized crime storytelling at its finest: one case, one season, obsessive detective work, and a Scandinavian bleakness that feels lived-in rather than imposed. Sarah Lund is unforgettable.

But Three seasons is a lot to commit to, and the final one wavers. The pacing can feel glacial if you're used to snappier procedurals.

MINDHUNTER2017

Two seasons of forensic psychology, serial killers, and the slow birth of criminal profiling. Fincher's direction is meticulous, the performances are quietly intense, and it captures the exhaustion of obsession perfectly.

But It ends on an unresolved note. If you need closure, you'll leave frustrated—though that's partly the point.

River2015

A damaged detective haunted by an unsolved murder (and by the ghost of his murdered daughter) investigates in contemporary London. Audacious structure, deeply moving, and Stellan Skarsgård is magnificent.

But The supernatural element won't appeal to everyone. It's only five episodes, and some feel the twist doesn't quite earn its ambition.

Bron / Broen2011

Both use the detective's fractured relationship with normalcy (family, stability) as the emotional spine of the story. Both understand that the crime is often less interesting than what it breaks open.

A body appears on the bridge between Sweden and Denmark; a Swedish detective and a Danish detective must work together despite incompatible methods and mutual suspicion. The best Scandinavian crime drama made, period. Tense, perfectly structured, and it understands that partnership is harder than enmity.

But If you've already seen it, that's fair—it's a monolith in the genre. The final season retreats from the original's perfection.

Y Gwyll2013

Welsh crime drama with a detective protagonist who's as damaged as Sorjonen, investigating brutal murders in a landscape that feels like a character itself. Moody, smart, and genuinely sad when it needs to be.

But Available in both Welsh and English; the pacing is deliberate to the point of challenge. Some episodes feel repetitive.

The Fall2013

Stella Gibson pursues a serial killer in Belfast with surgical precision and moral authority. Gillian Anderson is commanding, the cat-and-mouse dynamic is electric, and the writing is sharp.

But Three seasons, and the final one gets caught in a loop of its own obsession. The killer's perspective can feel gratuitous.

The Fall poster

Fortitude2015

A murder investigation in the Arctic sparks cascading violence and paranoia in a town where everyone has secrets. The setting is almost hallucinogenic, and the ensemble cast is excellently used.

But Ambitious to the point of sometimes losing the plot. Season two is a significant step down from the first.

Mare of Easttown2021

Kate Winslet as a Pennsylvania detective haunted by her past, investigating a murder in her hometown. Intimate character work, excellent supporting performances, and it understands grief without sentimentalizing it.

But Some found the accent distracting. The ending is deliberately quiet rather than cathartic, which won't satisfy everyone.

Rust Valley Restorers2018

Same structural idea: a crime that's ultimately a symptom of something far larger and sadder. Both are autopsies disguised as investigations.

British mining town, class trauma, a murder investigation that becomes an excavation of institutional rot. Four-part miniseries with a remarkably strong ensemble. Claustrophobic, angry, and more concerned with why violence happens than whodunnit.

But Much grittier and angrier than Sorjonen. Not at all interested in procedural satisfaction. Some viewers found it more depressing than rewarding.
