Television series
Fortitude
Arctic noir that turns the safety of a polar town inside out. A murder arrives in a place where violent crime shouldn't exist, and the investigation spirals into something far stranger and more unsettling. Atmospheric, tense, and genuinely weird—for viewers who want mystery with real strangeness underneath.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love mysteries where the setting is a character and dread builds through a close community turning on itself, and you enjoy holding several threads at once.
Skip it if you want a brisk, puzzle-solving pace; it lingers on bleak silences and slow unspooling, and at 26 hour-long episodes it asks for real commitment.
What it asks of you: Sixty-minute episodes, three seasons, and a patient, cold, often grim mood; it wants you to settle in and let small-town unease gather before anything resolves.

If you liked this
True Detective2014
Bleak, methodical detective work in an isolated place where nothing is quite as it seems. Excellent leads, dark atmosphere, and a mystery that rewards close attention. Structurally similar but with its own savage elegance.
But The first season is brilliant; the rest decline sharply. If you go deeper, expect diminishing returns.

The Killing2011
Danish crime drama where a murder investigation pulls apart an entire community. Meticulous, slow-burn interrogations, complex characters with no easy answers. The same sense that everyone is implicated somehow.
But Deliberately paced to the point of glacial. If you need plot momentum, this will frustrate you.

Westworld2016
Sci-fi thriller with genuine unsettling weirdness underneath a genre premise. Reality fractures, characters discover they're not what they thought, and nothing is stable. Gorgeous cinematography and an intelligence that respects the viewer.
But Increasingly convoluted as it goes on. Later seasons lose the clarity that made the early ones special.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Annihilation2018
Both use isolation and environmental strangeness as the real threat rather than traditional crime or conflict. The mystery is the place itself.
A team investigating a mysterious shimmer that rewrites the landscape and its creatures. Visual sci-fi that's genuinely uncanny—nothing jumps at you but everything feels wrong. Refuses easy explanation and respects ambiguity.
But Deliberately opaque about what it means. If you need narrative clarity, the ending will infuriate you.

The Bridge2010
Scandinavian crime thriller where a body on an international border triggers something bigger and stranger. Exceptional character work, dark humour, and that sense of dread that something is profoundly wrong beneath the surface.
But Tonally it swings between noir and the baroque. Not everyone finds that balance comfortable.

Dark2017
German sci-fi mystery in a small town where disappearances lead to impossible revelations. Intricate plotting, genuine atmosphere, and the feeling that the town itself is the real character. Deeply strange and deeply satisfying.
But Dense with mythology and interconnected timelines. You'll need to pay attention; it doesn't coddle viewers.

The Last of Us2023
Post-apocalyptic story that's more about human connection than spectacle. Exceptional acting, restrained direction, and genuine emotional weight. Each episode is a small perfect story that adds up to something larger.
But If you're attached to the game, the changes might frustrate you. Some find the pacing deliberate rather than gripping.

Midnight Mass2021
Horror in a small island community where faith and strangeness collide. Beautifully shot, morally complex, genuinely terrifying without relying on jump scares. A story about belief that doesn't take easy answers.
But Mike Flanagan's works are long and can feel indulgent. The religious themes won't sit comfortably with everyone.

Bodyguard2018
British political thriller that moves with genuine urgency. A protection officer assigned to a controversial politician, and nothing is what it seems. Tense, tightly plotted, and it sticks the ending.
But Relies on you believing the psychology of its protagonist. Some viewers find the central character's choices unbelievable.

Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie2017
Absurdist detective noir starring Jeff Bridges as an unusually damaged cop. Funny in a strange way, visually inventive, and genuinely committed to its own weird logic. A palate cleanser that's actually smart.
But The humour is avant-garde and not everyone's taste. It's deliberately slight and mannered—if you want substance, this reads as empty.

Severance2022
Both turn institutional safety into something sinister. The comfortable surface hides something actively wrong at the town's or corporation's foundation.
Sci-fi mystery about workers who have their professional and personal memories surgically divided. Utterly gripping, visually stunning, and genuinely disquieting. The kind of show that makes you think about what you've seen long after it's over.
But Moves deliberately and witholds information. The second season arrived years later; if you need resolution now, avoid.
