Film
Northern Lights
A Hallmark-adjacent mystery that pairs a troubled Baltimore cop with an Alaskan bush pilot when her father dies under suspicious circumstances. It's cosy procedural comfort food: small-town secrets, slow-burn romance, and the kind of plot that resolves itself by the end credits. For people who want their mysteries solved gently and their leads to end up together.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like a slow-burn small-town romance where the murder stays in the background and the Alaska setting does most of the emotional work.
Skip it if you want a tense whodunit, because the crime plot is thin and arrives in pieces between long stretches of courtship and landscape.
What it asks of you: Expect a leisurely two hours that settle in before they tighten, with plenty of quiet scenes and a gentle, unhurried attention to the people rather than the clues.

Hart of Dixie2011
Small-town Southern setting with a mystery-of-the-week structure, charming ensemble cast, and a genuine romance at its heart. The tone sits in that same warm, accessible space where drama and romance don't feel like they're fighting each other.
But It's deliberately lightweight and sometimes indulges in soap-opera plotting. If you need your mystery to feel consequential, this won't deliver.

Chesapeake Shores2016
Hallmark DNA but with real narrative momentum across seasons. A woman returns to her hometown and reconnects with an old flame while uncovering family secrets. Same cosy-mystery vibe with actual character development and stakes that matter.
But The seasonal Hallmark formula means some episodes lean hard into sentimentality. It asks you to meet it halfway emotionally.

Murder, She Wrote1984
The blueprint for this whole genre. Angela Lansbury solves murders in a small Maine town while building genuine relationships with the locals. The mystery writing is clever, the character work is real, and it proves the formula can be done with actual intelligence.
But It's a 1980s CBS show, so the pacing is deliberate and some cases resolve too neatly. Period television moves at its own speed.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Twin Peaks1990
Both use a murder to unlock a small community's secrets, but Twin Peaks inverts the comfort of the formula—it suggests that small towns can be genuinely sinister.
A murder in a small town spirals into something vast and genuinely unsettling. Like Northern Lights, it uses a murder mystery to explore how communities hide their darkest secrets. Unlike it, Twin Peaks is willing to suggest that some things are beyond explanation and that darkness runs deep.
But It's surreal, sometimes impenetrable, and refuses easy resolution. The second season drags. If you want answers, this is the wrong show.

Northern Exposure1990
Alaska-set dramedy with eccentric small-town characters, genuine mystery elements, and a romance between leads who genuinely earn their feelings for each other. The writing is sharper and stranger than you'd expect from the premise.
But It's weirder and more theatrically quirky than this film. If you want grounded realism, it'll feel like a detour into magical thinking.

The Summer I Turned Pretty2022
A mystery subplot woven through a summer romance in a close-knit community. It has the same willingness to let character moments breathe and finds genuine emotion in small-town dynamics. The chemistry between leads actually matters to the story.
But It's aimed at a younger audience and leans into the YA register. The mystery is secondary to the relationship drama.

Virgin River2019
A woman moves to a remote California town and uncovers mysteries while falling for the local bar owner. It has that same quality of slowly peeling back small-town secrets, and the central romance has real tension and chemistry.
But The show can be melodramatic and sometimes sacrifices sense for plot. If you need logic to hold up, it wobbles.

When Calls the Heart2013
A young teacher arrives in a frontier town and builds a life while mysteries unfold around her. The ensemble is warm, the setting is beautiful, and it takes its characters seriously even when it's being sentimental.
But It's Christian-coded and sometimes preachy about values. The mysteries are always resolved through moral clarity rather than actual detective work.

Fortitude2015
Both are mysteries set in extreme northern isolation, but Fortitude treats that setting as alienating and corrupting rather than charming.
An Arctic noir where a detective arrives in a remote Norwegian settlement to investigate a murder. It has Northern Lights' setting and mystery structure but commits fully to dread and moral ambiguity. The cold isn't just atmosphere—it's a character.
But It's deliberately slow, sometimes confusing, and the second season loses the plot. It's a serious drama, not a comfort watch.
