El refugio atómico
A Spanish thriller where wealthy rivals trapped in a luxury underground bunker during global catastrophe must confront each other and themselves. It's claustrophobic psychological drama with crime-thriller bones, examining what happens when money can't buy escape from shared history. For anyone drawn to character pressure-cookers and morally complicated people forced into proximity.

La Casa de Papel2017
Spanish crime drama with genuine stakes, intricate plotting, and characters driven by past grievances into impossible situations. Builds tension through careful revelation and moral ambiguity.
But The earlier seasons are tighter; later ones stretch concepts thin. Heavy reliance on convenient coincidences in the final stretch.

The Diplomat2023
Confined setting (mostly), high-stakes interpersonal drama, characters with secrets and grudges forced into proximity. Smart dialogue and genuine uncertainty about who to trust.
But Lighter tone than *El refugio atómico* and more focused on plot mechanics than character excavation. Might feel flippant if you want something darker.

Godless2017
Isolated community where past violence simmers beneath civility, forcing unlikely people into enforced coexistence. Atmospheric and morally unsettling with strong ensemble dynamics.
But Westerns aren't for everyone. Pacing is deliberate; if you want constant forward momentum, this will feel slow.

Something you would not have found on your own.
The Lives of Others2006
Both explore what happens when people are forced into unwanted proximity with those they might otherwise avoid. Both suggest that enforced closeness can humanize or devastate.
East German surveillance state thriller about proximity breeding unexpected empathy. Slow-burn psychological tension, morally complex characters, about how watching someone reveals their humanity.
But Subtitled, slow, and deliberately paced. Belongs to an older tradition of European cinema; if you want visceral pace, this will feel austere.

The Undoing2020
Wealthy family imploding under scrutiny, secrets unraveling, sharp performances from everyone. Moves quickly and keeps you guessing about who deserves sympathy.
But Resolves quite neatly in the end. If you dislike tidy resolutions to complex situations, you'll feel cheated.

MINDHUNTER2017
Psychological intensity, characters forced into uncomfortable proximity pursuing dangerous work. Meticulous about how trauma shapes behaviour and how proximity breeds conflict.
But The second season loses momentum. Cancelled on a cliffhanger. Requires patience with procedural groundwork before payoffs arrive.

The Outsider2020
Crime mystery where isolated characters must reckon with inexplicable horror. Strong ensemble, genuinely unsettling atmosphere, supernatural dread layered over human conflict.
But Moves into supernatural territory that might feel inconsistent if you want grounded thriller logic. Some find the late-season direction frustrating.

Ozark2017
Families trapped in escalating criminal situations, past mistakes catching up relentlessly. Dark character study disguised as crime thriller with performances that cut deep.
But Exhaustingly bleak. By the end it's nihilistic enough to feel punishing rather than cathartic. Finale divides viewers sharply.

Succession2018
Wealthy dysfunctional people circling each other with knives out, betrayal nested inside family obligation. Darkly funny, brilliantly written, characters reveal themselves under pressure.
But Takes several episodes to establish rhythm. Very American in sensibility; if you want something grittier or less stylised, this might feel too polished.

The Girlfriend Experience2016
Psychological portrait of people performing versions of themselves for money and power. Deliberately disorienting, morally murky, uses form innovatively to disorient viewers.
But Experimental structure and pacing will frustrate anyone wanting straightforward narrative. Very art-house; requires patience and tolerance for ambiguity.

The Night of the Iguana1964
Both use confined settings and enforced coexistence to strip away pretence. Both suggest that survival situations reveal truths money and social position usually hide.
Desperate people stranded in a Mexican hotel, heat and humidity pressing them together, secrets emerging through conversation and conflict. Tennessee Williams' humid psychodrama about desire and desperation.
But Theatrical and verbose in ways modern audiences find slow. Black-and-white, studio-bound, absolutely refuses plot momentum in favour of character.
