The Investigator
A Chinese corporate thriller about fraud investigators navigating white-collar crime in Shanghai. Xia Dong returns from the US to uncover truth and clear his name, reconnecting with old colleagues while exposing dangerous schemes. Procedural at heart but grounded in moral complexity—it's about people who care intensely about doing the right thing when institutions reward cutting corners.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like workplace procedurals where the pleasure is in patient detective legwork and a friendship built on old loyalty, rather than flashy action set-pieces.
Skip it if you want a fast, thriller-paced show; 49 episodes at roughly 45 minutes each is a long commitment, and the investigations unfold at a measured, paperwork-heavy speed.
What it asks of you: Roughly 49 episodes at about 45 minutes apiece make a long haul, and its measured, case-by-case rhythm rewards patience with the details.

MINDHUNTER2017
Two investigators build criminal profiling from the ground up, interviewing incarcerated killers. Methodical, cerebral work punctuated by moments of real danger. Like The Investigator, it finds drama in the process of uncovering truth rather than relying on plot mechanics.
But The second season loses momentum and the show was ultimately cancelled. Also slow—some viewers find the careful procedural pacing tedious rather than absorbing.

The Good Fight2017
Lawyers pursue complex cases that bleed into larger social questions. Sharp writing, strong ensemble cast, and a real commitment to exploring ethical gray areas. Same energy as The Investigator: competent professionals doing difficult work under pressure.
But Often feels like a legal encyclopedia if you're not already invested in the characters. Requires attention; it won't coddle you through plot exposition.

Tin Star2017
A former London detective runs a small Colorado police force while hiding dark secrets. Tense, character-driven crime drama with real stakes and moral weight. Shares The Investigator's focus on a principled protagonist facing systemic corruption.
But Darker and grittier than The Investigator—if you want something lighter, this isn't it. Also only three seasons, so the momentum can feel rushed by the end.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Infernal Affairs2002
Both turn investigation into a moral mirror: who are you really working for, and what are you willing to become to find the truth?
A mole hunt between Hong Kong police and organized crime: a cop embedded in the triads, a criminal embedded in the force. Taut, morally complex, and endlessly inventive. This is the spiritual ancestor of The Investigator's cat-and-mouse investigation of hidden identities.
But Film, not series—you get two hours, not episodic depth. Also made before the sequels that followed it, so Hong Kong crime cinema conventions may feel unfamiliar.

Line of Duty2012
Internal affairs investigators hunt corrupt cops across multiple complex cases. Tightly plotted with genuine twists and a team dynamic that feels earned. The investigation itself becomes the entire drama—same as The Investigator.
But Heavy Irish accents without subtitles can be tough for non-UK viewers. Later seasons grew increasingly convoluted and frustrating to many fans.

Severance2022
Corporate paranoia thriller with a troupe of workers uncovering the truth about their employer. Visually stunning and structurally clever. Combines The Investigator's workplace tension with larger existential stakes.
But Deliberately withholding about its plot; you have to sit with mystery and ambiguity. The second season left things deliberately unresolved, which infuriated some viewers.

White Collar2009
An art forger agrees to help the FBI catch other criminals. Charming, clever heist procedural with real heart between the con games. Similar chemistry of colleagues working together against white-collar crime.
But Lighter than The Investigator—almost cozy at times. If you want genuine moral darkness rather than clever banter, this might feel slight.

Le Bureau des Légendes2015
French espionage series about intelligence agents pursuing dangerous assignments. Grounded and procedural, with moments of real jeopardy. International scope and moral complexity match The Investigator's seriousness.
But Subtitles required. Also runs eight seasons and some viewers find the middle stretch repetitive despite strong first and final arcs.

Succession2018
A media dynasty tears itself apart from within. Gorgeously written, viciously funny, with characters who are competent but morally compromised. Corporate setting and investigation of hidden wrongdoing share DNA with The Investigator.
But Entirely about terrible people doing terrible things. If you watch for moral heroes, Succession will exhaust you. Also deliberately ends on an ambiguous note.

Justified2010
A principled marshal enforces the law in rural Kentucky. Character-driven, witty, and grounded in real consequence. The lead character's unshakeable ethical core mirrors Xia Dong's righteousness.
But Starts very strong but loses focus in later seasons. Some viewers find the final arc rushed compared to the show's earlier careful plotting.

The Bridge2010
Both prize the investigator's internal compass over action beats. Both build tension from careful work rather than spectacle.
A Swedish-Danish crime drama about two detectives hunting a serial killer who executes victims on the border between their countries. Methodical, haunting, and genuinely original in structure and tone. Investigation as the entire spine of the narrative, same as The Investigator.
But Swedish television pace and aesthetic—deliberate, sometimes austere. Subtitles. Also genuinely disturbing at times; not procedural comfort viewing.

A Company Man2012
Both ask: what does it cost to stay clean in a dirty system? The Investigator says you can. This film says you can't.
A hitman for a corporate fixer realizes too late what he's become. Quiet, sad South Korean noir about complicity and wasted morality. The lead character's journey inverts The Investigator's hero: a man who loses his principles slowly, then suddenly.
But Bleak and meditative; very little dialogue. Black-and-white morality is nowhere to be found. Also a standalone film, so no ongoing cast chemistry.
