Grande de España
A Spanish nobleman on the brink of ruin pins his hopes on selling his crumbling Madrid mansion to a wealthy businesswoman, but their negotiations spiral into a game of deception where neither party is quite what they seem. Elegant, funny, and built on the tension between appearance and reality—a character study disguised as a con.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy comedy about vanity and class, where a proud man's pretensions are funny precisely because they are sad, and money talks in a deadpan register.
Skip it if you want fast plot and big laughs; this is a talky, unhurried build over six episodes, with its humour dry and its melancholy running underneath.
What it asks of you: Attention to dialogue and class detail more than action, across six episodes; it lingers on decay and manners, so settle in rather than skim.

Schitt's Creek2015
A wealthy family loses everything and must rebuild from nothing. Like Grande de España, it mines comedy and genuine character growth from financial collapse, finding dignity in failure and unexpected connections.
But The early seasons trade in broad fish-out-of-water humour that can feel sitcom-generic before the show finds its deeper emotional register.

The Undoing2020
A taut psychological thriller where nothing is as it seems, and every character harbours secrets. The cat-and-mouse between intelligent, attractive people with hidden agendas matches the seduction and deception at Grande's core.
But Moves at HBO's stately pace; if you want plot to gallop, you'll find yourself frustrated by the deliberate reveals.

A Prophet2009
An extraordinary drama about a man reinventing himself through manipulation, charm, and performance. Like Don Leandro, the protagonist must navigate a world that rewards appearance over substance, and both explore how far performance can take you.
But Set in a prison, it's austere and sometimes brutal. The tone is considerably darker than a Netflix dramedy.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Le Samouraï1967
Both explore the philosophy beneath performance: what remains of a person when the mask is all they have? Both suggest that the performance might be the most honest thing about them.
An ice-cold meditation on performance and authenticity in which a hitman's entire life is constructed appearance—every gesture, every relationship, a maintained fiction. Alain Delon's absolute commitment to the bit is hypnotic.
But Made in 1967 and deliberately slow; it's formalist cinema, not a plot machine. It demands patience and rewards silence.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels1988
Two con artists playing elaborate games of seduction and deception against each other, with intelligence and style. It has the exact DNA of Grande's high-stakes social theatre and mutual manipulation.
But A broad comedy from the 1980s; tastes in that register have shifted, and some setups feel dated now.

Succession2018
Ruthless people protecting their status and fortunes through schemes, seductions, and calculated performances. The writing is sharp enough to track multiple layers of deception simultaneously, exactly like what Grande appears to do.
But Bleak and cynical. There's less warmth here than in a Spanish dramedy about ruins and second chances.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend2015
A protagonist who constructs elaborate false narratives to justify her behaviour, while the show gently deconstructs the stories we tell ourselves. Both explore the gap between who we pretend to be and who we actually are.
But Heavy on musical numbers; if you're allergic to spontaneous song, this will test your patience.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel2017
A woman navigating a world of appearances and social expectation, learning to perform authenticity as a weapon. Both share a love of verbal sparring and the particular comedy of people pretending to be someone they're not.
But The rapid-fire dialogue and perpetual busyness can feel exhausting rather than delightful, especially after a long episode.

The Killer2023
A glacial, intelligent thriller about a man performing normalcy while concealing his true nature. Both explore how much of life is theatre, and what happens when masks slip between intelligent players.
But Deliberately paced and minimalist. It refuses emotional climax; if you want catharsis, look elsewhere.

Bodyguard2018
A taut British thriller built entirely on the question of who to trust. Two people playing an intricate game where every conversation has hidden stakes and true intentions remain obscured until the final move.
But Relentlessly tense without much levity. The tone is grim throughout; it won't give you the pleasures of a dramedy.

Dekalog1989
Both understand that financial disaster, seduction, and self-invention are ways people grapple with deeper questions about who they are and what they deserve. Both find spiritual stakes in material circumstances.
Ten linked stories about ordinary people navigating morality, desire, and self-deception in an apartment building. Kieślowski's gift is revealing the hidden complexity in every life and the gap between what people claim to want and what they actually pursue.
But Polish, philosophical, and meditative rather than plot-driven. It requires active engagement; it won't entertain you passively.

A Serious Man2009
Both protagonists are men defending their place in the world through performance and negotiation. Both ask: what do we owe society, and what does society owe us? Both suggest the answer might devastate you.
A man watching his life fall apart while clinging to respectability and appearances, navigating a world where everyone seems to be running a con. The Coens find black comedy in the gap between status and reality, between intention and consequence.
But Mordant and unsettling rather than warm. It refuses easy resolutions or moral clarity; you may leave frustrated rather than satisfied.
