Maachis
Maachis is a raw, unflinching look at how ordinary young people in Punjab become radicalized in the aftermath of state violence. It's politically urgent and dramatically intense, grounded in real events but told through intimate human stories. For viewers ready to sit with complexity and moral ambiguity.

Rang De Basanti2006
Explores radicalization of idealistic youth through friendship and political awakening. Tabu's costar Aamir Khan delivers a nuanced performance in a film that asks hard questions about violence and justice without easy answers.
But More conventional in structure and considerably more hopeful in tone. Some may find its resolution too neat for the messy questions it raises.

Natrang2010
Marathi film about an actor consumed by his craft and the decay of his world around him. Similar intensity and commitment to unglamorous realism, with a protagonist whose choices become increasingly difficult to justify.
But Requires patience with a slow, meditative pace. The descent into obsession can feel repetitive if you're not attuned to its particular wavelength.

The Kite Runner2007
Explores guilt, redemption, and the impact of political violence on individuals and families. Both films dig into personal betrayal and complicity within larger historical traumas.
But Feels more narratively conventional and emotionally calculated than Maachis. The American production values may soften what should cut deeper.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Sholay1975
Both feature Om Puri (barely) and both ultimately ask whether honor and loyalty survive when the world offers no reward for either. Sholay wraps this in entertainment; Maachis refuses to.
Iconic Hindi masala film about two small-time crooks hired to catch a bandit. The engine is action-thriller but the emotional core is about friendship, trust, and moral ambiguity under pressure—the real story Maachis also tells beneath its politics.
But Nearly three hours, deliberately paced for theatrical impact. The musical numbers stop momentum entirely if you want unbroken tension.

The Hitman's Bodyguard2017
Bengali film examining a political murder and the ripples through a family. Similar DNA of state violence, complicity, and ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances.
But Even more deliberately paced than Maachis. Without subtitles creating friction, the emotional pace may feel glacial.

Kaala2018
Rajinikanth vehicle about a man fighting for his community against gentrification and state power. Uses genre conventions to explore political violence and resistance with visual flair.
But Swings between commercial spectacle and serious politics in ways that undercut both. The star persona pulls away from the material's weight.

Bandit Queen1994
Extraordinary performance by Seema Biswas in a biographical thriller about becoming an outlaw. Relentless in its refusal to sentimentalize suffering or heroism, like Maachis demands.
But Depicts sexual violence graphically and without flinching. The trauma on screen never becomes cathartic or comfortable.

Tamas
Doordarshan miniseries about Partition's human cost. Explores how communal violence reshapes ordinary people in real time, with Om Puri's generation performing the fracturing nation.
But Shot on video in the late '80s; the production values look dated even accounting for era. The scope sometimes exceeds the intimate storytelling approach.

A Prophet2009
Both track the precise psychological and circumstantial steps by which ordinary young men become dangerous. Neither blames or excuses; both show the machinery working.
French film following a young Arab man's rise in prison, showing how institutions and violence shape identity. Devastating portrait of radicalization and complicity told with precision and no editorializing. Maachis in a European key.
But Language barrier without subtitles. The prison setting is claustrophobic by design—some find it genuinely difficult to sit through.
