Sholay is Bollywood's most beloved blockbuster, a three-and-a-half-hour fusion of spaghetti western, buddy comedy, tragic romance and musical spectacle that somehow never feels bloated. Every scene was built to be quoted for decades, and mostly has been. Maximalist, unashamedly melodramatic, and made for a room full of people rather than a solo scroll — this is essential viewing for understanding how mainstream Hindi cinema works.

Sergio Leone's western is one of Sholay's clearest ancestors — the same slow-building tension, mythic villains, and operatic scale, but stripped down to pure genre craftsmanship. This is where the DNA came from.

But Its pacing is glacial by design, and if you're not already sold on westerns, the near-silent stretches might test your patience.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly1966

More Leone, but this time with the buddy banter and shifting loyalties that Sholay borrowed wholesale — two mismatched men, one desert, a soundtrack that will live in your head forever.

But Nearly three hours of squinting men in the sun; if you want plot momentum over atmosphere, it can feel indulgent.

Another sprawling Bollywood epic mixing music, romance, comedy and genuine stakes — cricket instead of banditry — with the same generous, crowd-pleasing spirit that makes Sholay so rewatchable.

But The cricket match takes up nearly half the runtime, which is thrilling if you care about the sport and a slog if you don't.

Seven Samurai1954

Sholay's basic engine — outsiders recruited to defend the helpless against a monstrous villain — descends from this film via the western genre it inspired. Same skeleton, entirely different flesh.

Kurosawa's masterpiece is the great-grandfather of every 'hire outsiders to save the village from evil' story, Sholay included. Watching it feels like seeing the blueprint before any of the ornamentation got added.

But It's three and a half hours of black-and-white Japanese cinema with a slower, more contemplative rhythm — no songs, no comic relief.

But It's heavier and sadder than Sholay, without the comic relief — a different mood entirely if you wanted more of the fun.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid1969

Two charming outlaws, one doomed friendship, plenty of banter before the bullets — this is the American cousin of Jai and Veeru, right down to the bittersweet ending.

But It's a quieter, more melancholic film than Sholay, without the musical numbers or the sheer scale of spectacle.

Want to see the masala tradition pushed to its modern maximalist extreme — bigger stunts, bigger emotions, bigger everything? RRR is Sholay's spiritual descendant on steroids.

But It's relentlessly over-the-top in a way that can feel exhausting if you were hoping for Sholay's more grounded character work.

A totally different genre — campus comedy with a message — but the same instinct for blending laughs, tears and social commentary into one giant crowd-pleasing package that defines mainstream Hindi cinema.

But There's no action, no villain, no western trappings at all — just comedy and sentiment, which might feel like a bait-and-switch.

Another titan of the Bollywood canon, showing the same industry's gift for romance and spectacle in a completely different key — pure love story instead of revenge western.

But If you came to Sholay for action and banditry, this swaps all of that out for family drama and courtship.

¡Three Amigos!1986

It borrows the exact structural spine of Sholay and Seven Samurai — a village, a terrorizing villain, imported 'heroes' — and detonates it as comedy, revealing how thin the line is between epic and parody.

The same 'hire heroes to save a terrorized village' premise played for pure farce, with three vain actors mistaken for real gunfighters. It's the joke Sholay never quite tells on itself.

But It's broad, silly, very 1980s American comedy — nothing like Sholay's sincerity or scale, and some of the humor has aged unevenly.

Oldboy2003

Both films are built around a man engineering elaborate revenge, but where Sholay wraps that hunger in music and romance and friendship, Oldboy lets it curdle into something monstrous and unrelieved.

A ferociously serious South Korean revenge thriller that strips away every ounce of charm and comedy Sholay uses to soften its vengeance plot, showing what the same engine looks like without the warmth.

But It's genuinely brutal — violent, bleak, and emotionally punishing in ways Sholay never approaches. Not a fun night in.
