Arjun
Other titles called Arjun: the 2004 film.
A 1985 Bombay-set drama about a young man who stumbles into vigilantism after a friend's murder, finding purpose working for a charismatic politician. Sunny Deol's breakout vehicle: raw, earnest, occasionally overwrought, driven by moral fury rather than swagger. For anyone drawn to the particular texture of 80s Hindi cinema—melodrama with muscle, righteous anger in primary colours.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you love a righteous hothead's revenge tale played straight, with big melodramatic set pieces, sudden shifts from brawl to tears, and a hero who acts before he thinks.
Skip it if you want restrained storytelling, since this runs past two and a half hours and leans on loud speeches, heavy family melodrama and a romance the plot keeps pausing for.
What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, unhurried sit: the story takes its time with family life before the action arrives, and the mood swings between grim and sentimental quickly.

Sholay1975
The template for everything that follows: two men against injustice, mythic in scope, genuinely thrilling. If you're watching Arjun, you need to know where the DNA comes from.
But Nearly three and a half hours, and the pacing assumes patience with songs and romance that modern viewers sometimes find glacial.

Kaala2018
Rajinikanth as a godfather fighting exploitation in a working-class neighbourhood. Same engine as Arjun—righteous anger, moral clarity—but refined by 33 years and a massive budget.
But Visually dense and sometimes opaque in its political messaging. The metaphors don't always land cleanly.

Nayakan1987
Tamil film about a slum boy who becomes a don. Explores the seduction of power and protection with real moral weight, shot with documentary-like intensity. The spiritual sibling to what Arjun attempts.
But Subtitled, three hours, and deeply pessimistic. No redemption arc, only the slow corruption of good intentions.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Satya1998
Both trace the moment a good man turns violent to solve a problem, but Satya refuses the redemption Arjun offers. It's the dark sequel.
A drifter becomes a gangster in Bombay; the film is structured like a tragedy, watching innocence curdle into complicity. Visually invented, morally unflinching. It's what happens if Arjun's story continues.
But Brutal and bleak. Ram Gopal Varma's style is deliberately artificial and distancing; it doesn't give you the emotional satisfaction of rooting for the hero.

Khakee2004
Four cops with different moral codes plan a heist. Sharp, energetic, and genuinely interested in what happens when justice and law diverge. Treats the moral ambiguity Arjun only hints at.
But By 2004 sensibilities, so glossier and faster-paced than what you're watching. The tone is thriller, not drama.

Hey Ram2000
Kamal Haasan in Partition-era Bombay: rage, love, communal violence, and the question of whether individual heroism means anything. Ambitious, messy, genuinely felt.
But Deliberately fragmented and sometimes impenetrable. Haasan's performance is fierce but not always accessible.

Rang De Basanti2006
Young people stumble into activism after a friend dies; the film takes their righteousness seriously without letting them off easy. Accessible but philosophically complicated.
But Sentiment verges on nationalism. The ending divides viewers on whether it's cathartic or troubling.

Jai Bhim2021
A lawyer fights police brutality through the system while Arjun fights it outside it. Both ask: what do you do when justice is structurally unavailable? Urgent and heartbreaking.
But True story, recent trauma. The violence is depicted without distance, and the injustice is real and ongoing.

Dil Chahta Hai2001
Friendship, love, and growing up with style and humour. Completely different register from Arjun, but it shows Hindi cinema learning to breathe and be playful about human entanglement.
But If you're hungry for Arjun's moral intensity, this will feel lightweight and rom-com adjacent.

Pather Panchali1955
Both are films about what poverty does to families and what happens when you have no legitimate options. One turns to vigilantism; one simply endures. Different countries, different decades, same wound.
Satyajit Ray's first film: a poor family in Bengal, tenderness amid scarcity, a child's death that changes everything. Arjun is operatic and Pather Panchali whispers, but both find moral weight in ordinary lives.
But Black and white, 125 minutes, almost nothing happens by plot standards. It's a mood and a world, not a story.

Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 12012
Both are stories about young men from nothing who become weapons for older men's ambitions. Arjun believes he's chosen; by Wasseypur's logic, he never had a choice at all.
A crime saga set in a coal mining region: generational violence, betrayal, the impossibility of escape. Five and a half hours across two films, and it's genuinely gripping. Arjun in the key of folk epic.
But Brutally violent and profane. The accents and slang are thick. Some viewers find the length indulgent and the morality utterly absent.
