Hum
Hum is a 1991 Hindi action-romance epic where three brothers separated in childhood reunite as adults to take down a crime boss. It's a three-hour spectacle of bombast, sentiment, and heroics—the kind of film that believes wholeheartedly in its own grandeur. For fans of '90s Bollywood excess and genuine emotional stakes wrapped in implausible action, it's essential viewing.

Sholay1975
The template for every Hindi action-revenge film that followed. Two heroes, a crime boss, betrayal, and operatic violence. If you loved Hum's scale and moral clarity, this is where it all began.
But It's nearly three hours long and moves at a deliberate pace. The first half builds character over plot, which modern audiences sometimes find slow.

Khuda Gawah1992
Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth reunited in another globe-trotting saga of friendship and vengeance. Shot across Afghanistan and Pakistan, it has the same operatic ambition and melodramatic family stakes.
But The plot is genuinely convoluted and strains credulity. The pacing sags in places despite its three-hour-plus runtime.

Taal1999
Subhash Ghai's maximalist romance-thriller with Akshay Kumar. Gorgeous cinematography, an iconic score, and that same '90s Bollywood conviction that love and action belong in the same film.
But It's sentimental in ways that can feel overwrought. Some of the romance beats prioritize spectacle over genuine connection.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The Godfather Part II1974
Both structure their narratives around separated/divided brothers learning the cost of loyalty in a criminal world.
Three brothers, one legacy, one empire to run or destroy. Coppola's meditation on power and family loyalty follows a similar emotional architecture: blood ties tested by violence, childhood innocence versus adult corruption. The scale is different, the feeling is kin.
But It's nearly four hours and deeply interior—very little of Hum's action spectacle. If you came for thrills, you'll find instead a slow examination of moral compromise.

Ram Lakhan1989
Two brothers on opposite sides of the law—one a cop, one a gangster. It has the family melodrama, the action set pieces, and the moral complexity that Hum thrives on, in a slightly tighter package.
But The tonal whiplash between comedy and violence can feel jarring. It never quite commits to the darkness it hints at.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995
The definitive '90s Bollywood romance, with genuine chemistry and a soundtrack that became the decade's heartbeat. If you respond to Hum's romantic sincerity, this is the emotional core done perfectly.
But The plot is almost aggressively simple, and it relies entirely on the lead pair's charm. If they don't captivate you, there's not much else to hold onto.

Karan Arjun1995
Reincarnation, brotherhood, and revenge with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. It shares Hum's willingness to be emotionally excessive and its faith in action as a vehicle for family loyalty.
But The supernatural elements feel grafted on. The logic of the plot falls apart if you think about it for more than five minutes.

Gupt: The Hidden Truth1997
A slick, stylish thriller about crime and corruption with real narrative surprises. It modernizes the Bollywood action formula with a Hitchcockian twist and genuinely solid suspense.
But It's less emotionally warm than Hum. The cynicism undercuts some of the melodrama, which might feel cold if you came for sincerity.

Khoon Ka Rishta1981
Released the same year as Hum, this Rajinikanth revenge drama shares its DNA—family bonds, underworld violence, a man driven by loyalty to protect those he loves. It's the B-side to Hum's A-side.
But The English title is misleading (it's Tamil-dubbed Hindi). The action feels less inventive, and the pacing can drag in the middle sections.
Mother India1957
Both build their entire moral universe around maternal sacrifice and the bonds between brothers; Hum is Mother India remixed through the action genre.
A classic that invented the Bollywood melodrama of family sacrifice and maternal love. Nargis's mother protecting her sons echoes through every family-centered Hindi film, including Hum. It's the root of the tree you're watching grow.
But It's in black and white and moves at a very different rhythm. The emotional register is tragic where Hum is heroic; it's less comfortable to watch.

Harakiri1962
Both center on a man defying a crime boss to protect his honor and family loyalty, but Harakiri asks: what if heroism doesn't save anyone?
A Japanese masterpiece about honor, loyalty, and the cost of defying power—but where Hum finds heroism, this finds tragedy. Masaki Kobayashi's compositional genius and the film's moral absolutism create something devastating. If Hum made you feel the weight of loyalty, this shows you what that weight actually crushes.
But It is relentlessly bleak and ends in suicide. There is no catharsis, no victory, only the slow dismantling of one man's honor. It will sit with you for days.
