Almost the same joke in a spacesuit: washed-up actors mistaken for real heroes, forced to live up to their fictional selves. It's sharper, funnier, and somehow more moving than it has any right to be.

But If you don't already have some affection for Star Trek-style sci-fi tropes, a chunk of the satire will sail past you.

Mel Brooks doing to the Western what Three Amigos does to the silent-era swashbuckler — gleeful, anarchic comedy unafraid to be genuinely stupid in service of a big satirical target.

Seven Samurai1954

This is literally the story Three Amigos is spoofing: a village under threat hires outside fighters to save it. Kurosawa plays it as tragedy and honour; the amigos play it as farce, but the bones are identical.

The original, and still the best, version of 'strangers hired to save a village' — three and a half hours of tension, camaraderie and heartbreak that basically invented modern action cinema.

But It's a long, black-and-white, subtitled drama with none of the amigos' jokes — a serious commitment, not a lark.

Tropic Thunder2008

Actors playing soldiers get dropped into a real war and have to fake their way to survival — the same mistaken-identity engine as the amigos, but meaner, sharper, and far more cynical.

But The satire is nastier and more R-rated than anything here, with jokes that have drawn real, lasting controversy.

Spaceballs1987

Same Mel Brooks silliness, same decade, same willingness to break the fourth wall whenever a joke needs it. If the amiable dumbness of the amigos worked on you, this scratches an identical itch.

But It's a Star Wars parody first and foremost, so if you don't know the source material some gags lose their target.

Wall-to-wall absurdist gags fired at a rate Three Amigos never attempts — for when you want the same big-dumb-comedy spirit but cranked up to eleven and never letting go.

But There's barely any story to speak of; it's a pure joke-delivery machine rather than a character comedy.

A straighter, swashier take on the trio-of-heroes formula — real sword fights, real romance, but still light enough on its feet to feel like a genuine lark.

But It plays its adventure mostly straight, so don't expect the constant joke density the amigos deliver.

A charming, underseen comic Western that plays the genre's clichés for laughs decades before Three Amigos did, with James Garner at his most effortlessly funny.

But It's slower and more old-fashioned in pace, closer to a gentle sitcom than a modern comedy.

Same premise as Three Amigos and Seven Samurai — outsiders hired to defeat a village's tormentor — but filtered through Bollywood's musical-masala machine: songs, melodrama, and a genuinely menacing villain.

One of the biggest hits in Indian cinema history, mixing comedy, romance, tragedy and musical numbers into the same bandit-versus-village shape Three Amigos plays for laughs — just three hours longer and ten times as emotional.

But It's a three-hour Hindi-language epic with musical numbers, a real tonal leap if you only want light comedy.

Disney's own trio of heroes on a south-of-the-border romp — three characters, one literally personifying Mexico, singing and slapsticking through fantasy Latin America decades before the amigos rode in.

A gorgeous, genuinely trippy piece of WWII-era Disney fantasia, blending live action and animation with the same goofy affection for Mexican folklore that Three Amigos later plays for comedy.

But It's more surreal art project than narrative comedy, and its cultural politics are very much of 1944.
