Andolan

A 1995 Bollywood drama about two brothers whose diverging paths after college tear their family apart. It mixes action, comedy, and sentiment across its ambitious 158 minutes, hitting the melodramatic beats that defined Hindi cinema of the era. For anyone who loves that particular brand of earnest, overstuffed 90s Bollywood emotion.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge1995

Released the same year, this is 90s Bollywood at its most assured: a love story with genuine warmth, stunning locations, and the era's confidence that romance could carry a film. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol became icons here.

But If you find the pacing of older Bollywood exhausting, this three-hour film won't convert you. The gender politics are very much of their time.

Hera Pheri2000

Govinda at his comedic peak, playing a character equally comfortable with slapstick and sincere moments. The film balances humour and heart the way Andolan attempts to, but with sharper writing and tighter pacing.

But It's a heist comedy, so if you're coming for heavy drama, the tonal shift will feel jarring. Some gags date badly.

Lamhe1991

Yash Chopra's baroque melodrama about impossible love across generations, shot with operatic visual beauty. If Andolan's emotional maximalism appeals to you, this is the film that perfected that aesthetic.

But It's glacially paced and deeply weird about its central romance. Not everyone finds beauty in that kind of strangeness.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India2001

Both are maximalist dramas from Hindi cinema that locate their moral stakes in individual choices and family rupture within larger systems of power. Both trust the audience to sit with overwhelming emotion.

Aamir Khan's three-hour epic about resistance and collective action against empire. Like Andolan, it believes cinema should be grand, moral, and willing to sit with its ideas. But it has the craft to justify every minute.

But It's a sports film disguised as political drama, which some find precious. The length and earnestness can feel punishing if the film doesn't grip you early.

Rang De Basanti2006

Brothers, idealism, moral awakening, and the question of what happens when young men choose different futures. It's a spiritual heir to films like Andolan but with modern filmmaking clarity and genuine urgency.

But The tonal shifts from comedy to activism to tragedy are deliberate but jarring. Some find it manipulative.

Sholay1975

The grandfather of action-drama in Hindi cinema, where brotherhood, honour, and revenge are the whole point. If Andolan reaches for epic scope, this is where that impulse comes from.

But It's a 214-minute film from 1975, so patience with older filmmaking is essential. The pacing is glacial by modern standards.

Hey Ram2000

Kamal Haasan in Kamalhassan's most ambitious, divisive work: a drama about ideology, family rupture, and the violence lurking beneath ordinary life. Formally experimental and genuinely upsetting.

But It's bewilderingly complex, sometimes incoherent, and its politics are controversial. Many viewers find it alienating rather than moving.

Drishyam2013

An ordinary family man forced into extraordinary circumstances by forces beyond his control. The tension between domestic life and moral compromise mirrors Andolan's exploration of how choices fracture families.

But It's a thriller, so its pleasures are very different. If you want melodrama, this is procedural and cool rather than passionate.

Like Stars on Earth2007

Aamir Khan directing and starring in a film about a father and son whose failure to understand each other nearly destroys them. It's Andolan's themes refined through a modern, gentler lens.

But It's sentimental and more than a little self-satisfied about its own emotional intelligence. Some find it saccharine.

Khuda Gawah1992

Sanjay Dutt and Govinda both appear in this Afghan-set action-drama about honour and revenge. It has the scale and melodrama of Andolan, plus Dutt doing what he does best.

But It's a bloated, unfocused film that tries to be too many things. The plot meanders, and the action sequences feel arbitrary.

Piku2015

Both centre on family fracture and the failure of men to communicate across generations. But Piku trusts comedy and specificity where Andolan reaches for melodrama.

Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Irrfan Khan in a film about adult children and aging parents negotiating love, duty, and independence. It's Andolan's family tension reframed as comedy-drama, with incomparably better writing.

But It's a road movie about constipation and parent-child dysfunction. The humour is specific and domestic; if that doesn't land for you, nothing else will.

A Separation2011

Both explore how individual moral choices create family catastrophe. But where Andolan melodramatizes and resolves, A Separation sits in the wreckage without easy answers.

Asghar Farhadi's Iranian masterpiece about a marriage that collapses and the moral consequences that ripple outward. It does what Andolan attempts—showing how personal choices shatter families—with surgical precision and genuine moral ambiguity.

But It's austere and offers no catharsis. If you want emotional resolution or a clear hero, this will frustrate you. It's also in Farsi.
