Qurbani
A 1980 Bollywood crime-drama about two best friends, a cabaret dancer, and the criminal underworld that tears them apart. Qurbani is stylish, violent, and deeply invested in masculine honour and betrayal. It's watchable for its swagger, its stars, and the particular fever-dream logic of early-80s Hindi cinema—where gangsters philosophize and friendships shatter over a woman's love.

Sholay1975
The template for everything that came after: two heroes, impossible odds, a woman between them, and action sequences that still feel fresh. If you want to understand why Qurbani exists, start here.
But Nearly three hours, subtitled, and the pacing is deliberate by modern standards. The emotional registers shift without warning.

Deewaar1975
Another Amitabh-adjacent masterpiece about loyalty, class, and the cost of friendship. The moral weight is heavier, the writing sharper, the emotional devastation complete.
But It's relentlessly bleak and operates almost entirely in register of male shame and resentment. There's no comfort in it.

Hera Pheri1976
Vinod Khanna (your Amar) in a stylish crime caper that has the same swagger and the same casual violence. It understands the appeal of the underworld without pretending it's noble.
But The plot is thinner than you'd expect, and some of the gender politics are queasy even by 1970s standards.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Pakeezah1972
Both films center on a female performer loved by two men, but Pakeezah treats the situation as tragedy and Qurbani as action-melodrama. They're inverse versions of the same story.
Also built around a cabaret dancer caught between two men, but made eight years earlier and in a completely different register: painterly, melancholic, almost operatic in its romance. Same situation, entirely different emotional language—see how the same ingredients become art in different hands.
But It moves at a glacial pace and is more interested in aesthetics than plot. The courtship scenes go on forever. It requires patience most modern viewers won't have.

Charas1976
A crime drama that shares Qurbani's interest in friendship destroyed by circumstance. It's grittier, less operatic, and genuinely unsettling about corruption and complicity.
But It's not as fun as Qurbani—there's no music, no glamour, just the slow erosion of decent people.

Ram Balram1980
Released the same year as Qurbani, it's got the same DNA: two friends on opposite sides of the law, a woman complicating things, and Amitabh Bachchan at his most magnetic.
But The climax strains credibility even by the standards of Bollywood fantasy. Some subplots vanish without explanation.

Khoon Ka Rishta1981
An earlier entry in the revenge-and-betrayal genre that influenced the template Qurbani uses. It's rawer and more sadistic about its own violence.
But The pacing is sluggish and some sequences feel like they're filler. The ending is abrupt.
Vidhaata1982
Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar in a morality play about crime, duty, and whether corruption can ever be justified. It has Qurbani's philosophical pretensions but executes them better.
But It's more interested in talking about ethics than showing them. Long stretches are fairly static.

Amar Akbar Anthony1977
A massive hit from the same era that proves Bollywood could do friendship, comedy, and drama all at once. It's exuberant in a way Qurbani isn't quite willing to be.
But It's almost three hours and the plot mechanics are genuinely ridiculous. The tone whiplashes between farce and melodrama.

The Grifters1990
Both are about how proximity and affection create the exact conditions for catastrophe. Both understand that the people you love most are the ones who can hurt you worst.
An American crime film about people who love each other but can't help destroying one another. Same architecture as Qurbani—betrayal, loyalty, desperation—but American, contemporary, and lean. The comparison shows what Qurbani is doing differently.
But It's a con movie about damaged people with almost no one to root for. The ending is punishing. It's also in English, subtitled from the original Americanese.

C.I.D.2001
Both are obsessed with the same moral question: is there a meaningful difference between the cop and the criminal? Both answer it by showing how circumstances blur the line.
The granddaddy of Hindi crime television—a series that shaped how Bollywood thinks about cops, criminals, and moral ambiguity. Watching it shows you where Qurbani's DNA comes from, decades earlier, in a totally different medium.
But It's episodic 1950s television, which means it moves slowly and repeats itself. The cases are not always interesting. You'll need to watch several episodes for the pattern to emerge.
