Charas
A 1976 Hindi action drama where a returning NRI discovers his property has become a drug operation hub. Dharmendra and Hema Malini lead a film that straddles earnest social messaging about narcotics with melodrama, romance, and explosive set pieces. It's pulpy, morally straightforward, and unmistakably of its moment—for those who love Bollywood's '70s genre cinema.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy masala Bollywood from the 1970s, where a hero's swagger, big musical moments and a clear good-versus-bad showdown carry the whole thing with unselfconscious gusto.
Skip it if you want restrained realism or a tight, modern pace, since this one leans into melodrama, romance and crowd-pleasing excess well beyond what its drug-trade plot strictly needs.
What it asks of you: Nearly three hours of it, with the patience for song breaks and sprawling set pieces, and a willingness to let big emotions and broad villainy play out at full volume.

Sholay1975
The template for Hindi action cinema: cops, bandits, romance, betrayal, and spectacular violence across gorgeous locations. Amjad Khan (who's in Charas) is unforgettable as the villain. It's thrilling, funny, and genuinely moving.
But Nearly three and a half hours, and the pacing breathes in ways modern action films don't. Some slow stretches test patience.

Deewaar1975
Amitabh Bachchan's defining role: a man shaped by poverty and anger, caught between his mother and the underworld. It's operatic family drama with social conscience and real emotional weight. Unforgettable.
But The melodrama can feel intense if you're not attuned to '70s Bollywood's emotional register. Some will find it overwrought.

Amar Akbar Anthony1977
Three brothers separated at birth, raised by Hindu, Muslim, and Christian families, reunited by fate and action. It's joyful, absurd, romantic, and utterly charming. Amitabh, Rajesh Khanna, and Vinod Khanna together.
But The plot is deliberately preposterous and the tone shifts wildly. If you want narrative coherence, this will frustrate you.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Bandit Queen1994
Both films confront India's corruption and criminality, but where Charas offers action-film fantasy solutions, Bandit Queen shows the actual violence embedded in the system. One comforts, one accuses.
Seema Biswas in a brutal, unflinching account of a real woman forced into banditry by caste violence and police brutality. It's angry, raw, and utterly uninterested in the romance or spectacle that soften similar stories. A masterpiece of cinema.
But It depicts graphic sexual violence and police brutality with no softening. The film is difficult by design. Some will find it unbearable; that may be the point.

Zanjeer1973
The film that made Amitabh Bachchan a star: a cop hunting a smuggling ring through Mumbai's underworld. Lean, efficient, with genuine edge. It invented the angry young man archetype that defined a decade.
But By modern standards it's fairly straightforward. The social anger that felt explosive then reads as familiar now.

Hera Pheri1976
Vinod Khanna and Mumtaz in a heist-crime caper that's clever, genuinely funny, and moves with real velocity. It proves '70s Hindi cinema could do wit and mechanics alongside melodrama.
But It's a crime-comedy hybrid that some viewers find tonally scattered. The crimes are small-scale compared to the big action epics.

The Burning Train1980
A disaster film with an ensemble cast aboard a burning train, mixing action, romance, and genuine suspense. It's ridiculous and entertaining in equal measure, peak '80s spectacle.
But The dialogue is occasionally unintentionally funny and the plot contrivances are extreme. It requires a forgiving frame of mind.

Muqaddar Ka Sikandar1978
Amitabh Bachchan as a petty criminal pulled between crime and a woman he loves. It's a strong melodrama with real moral complexity and excellent supporting performances by Vinod Khanna and Rekha.
But The narrative is familiar territory by '70s standards and some sequences feel padded. It's solid rather than surprising.

Kalicharan1976
Rajesh Khanna as a thief reformed by love, tangling with Amitabh Bachchan's cop. It's fast-paced, romantic, and has some genuinely inventive action sequences for the era.
But The plot mechanics creak visibly and the characterization is thin. It coasts on charisma rather than depth.

Rang De Basanti2006
Both pit individual heroes against systemic corruption, but Rang De Basanti asks harder questions about what justice actually means. Charas assumes the answer; this one interrogates it.
Young Delhi students investigating a military cover-up, sliding from idealism into vigilante action. It's thrilling, funny, and genuinely moving, with real political anger underneath the masala. Aamir Khan at his best.
But The film's politics are emotionally satisfying but intellectually simplistic. It's more sentiment than argument, which will annoy anyone looking for nuance.

Satya1998
Where Charas sees the drug trade as a plot device for action, Satya sees it as a social system that corrupts everything it touches. One has good guys and bad guys; this has a world.
A man drifts into Mumbai's underworld in the '80s. It's shot like a thriller but it's actually a moral descent, unflinching about how crime works and what it costs. Amitabh Bachchan is chilling. The music is hypnotic. This is Hindi cinema at its most sophisticated.
But It's dark, slow-burn, and interested in mood over action. If you want excitement and clear heroes, you'll be disappointed. It's also in Hindi and Marathi without subtitles being universal.
