Yaarana
A 1981 Hindi action-romance about friendship tested by fortune and betrayal. Amitabh Bachchan carries this tale of two men whose bond fractures when success arrives unequally. It's earnest, propulsive, and genuinely interested in whether loyalty survives wealth—the kind of film that knows exactly what it is and commits fully to it.
If you liked this
Sholay1975
The definitive Hindi action film: two drifters, a bandit, moral complexity, and sequences that still move. Bachchan is unforgettable. If you want to understand why he became a legend, start here.
But It's 211 minutes and works at its own pace. The middle section loses narrative momentum, and subtlety is not the film's language.

Deewaar1975
Amitabh plays a son at odds with his father in a film about class, ambition, and whether success means anything if you lose your soul. Searingly emotional and structurally audacious.
But The melodrama will feel overwrought if you're not attuned to the register. It doesn't hold back, and some may find that exhausting.

Hera Pheri1976
A jewel heist film with real tension, inventive action, and a trio of leads with genuine chemistry. Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and Shashi Kapoor make you believe in their friendship.
But The plot occasionally spirals; you have to accept a certain amount of contrivance to enjoy it.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Kwaidan1965
Both films trust that emotional rupture—the fracture between two people—is the real drama. Kwaidan shows it through the supernatural; Yaarana through friendship. Both ask: what does it mean to be betrayed by someone you've loved?
A Japanese ghost film of stunning formal beauty—four stories about desire, betrayal, and cruelty, told with color and precision that stops your breath. It shares Yaarana's interest in what binds and severs human connection.
But It's deliberately slow, philosophical rather than narrative-driven. Patience with mood over plot is essential.

Chupke Chupke1975
A romantic comedy that actually lands—clever, warm, and full of playfulness. Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bachchan are delightful, and it shows the era's range.
But The pacing is decidedly leisurely. It's interested in lingering on moments rather than rushing plot.

Kaala Patthar1979
Bachchan in a coal mine after an explosion: a survival story with genuine stakes and a moral center. The film cares about class and dignity in ways many action films don't.
But It's slow-burn. Expect contemplation alongside spectacle, and some scenes feel overlong.

Hum Kisise Kum Naheen1977
A heist film with style and humor, ensemble fun. Shows Bachchan in a different register—charming and glib rather than brooding.
But It's lighter and less ambitious than his best work. Some sequences feel padded.

Adalat1976
A courtroom drama with real anger in it. Bachchan fights for a wronged woman; it's about justice, masculinity, and the system's failures.
But The dialogue can feel overwrought, and the emotional beats are telegraphed plainly.

Charas1976
A lower-profile Bachchan film about smuggling and moral compromise. Less polished than his blockbusters but sometimes more honest.
But It's uneven and occasionally feels like it's been edited down from something longer. The script has loose ends.

Nueba Yol: Por fin llegó Balbuena1995
Both are working-class friendship films about men navigating fortune and scarcity. Where Yaarana is melodramatic, Nueba Yol is sardonic—but the wound is the same: can friendship survive when money arrives?
A Cuban film about three men crossing from Cuba to the United States: a story of migration, friendship, and whether survival requires betraying each other. Unsparing, funny, and alive.
But It's in Spanish with limited subtitles in many regions. The tone shifts between comedy and grimness in ways that can feel jarring.

Stalker1979
Both films are structured around a central emotional and moral transaction: what one man owes another, and whether settling that debt costs the soul. Yaarana asks it in the language of Bombay action; Stalker asks it in metaphysical silence. Both are immovable on the question.
A Russian science-fiction meditation on desire, faith, and whether the things we pursue are worth the price we pay to reach them. Tarkovsky at his most hypnotic.
But It's 163 minutes of ambiguous, philosophical cinema. If you need narrative momentum and clear answers, this will feel glacial and opaque.
