Amar Akbar Anthony

A 1977 Bollywood epic about three brothers raised Hindu, Muslim, and Christian who reunite years later to avenge their separation. It's a sprawling, wildly entertaining blend of action, comedy, romance and melodrama—the kind of film that assumes no scene is complete without a musical number, a fistfight, or ideally both. For anyone who loves movies that swing for the fences and swing hard.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love big-hearted Bollywood masala where slapstick, melodrama and song-and-dance numbers tumble together without apology, and you don't mind the plot being held together by coincidence.

Skip it if you want a tight, sober story; at over three hours this is loose, lurches between tones and asks you to forgive a lot of cheerful implausibility.

What it asks of you: Running just over three hours, it is leisurely and musical, lurching from broad slapstick to tearful family melodrama, and it rewards going along rather than scrutinising.

Sholay1975

The template for the modern Hindi action film: two heroes, moral ambiguity, a villain who steals scenes, and songs that stop the narrative dead because they're too good to rush. If you loved the scope of Amar Akbar Anthony, this is its direct ancestor.

But Nearly three and a half hours long, and the middle section spends a lot of time on romance subplots that move glacially by modern standards.

Hera Pheri1976

Three-hero comedy-caper with the same DNA as Amar Akbar Anthony but lighter and faster. Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, and Amitabh Bachchan charm their way through a heist with style and humor that feels effortless.

But The plot is thinner than a thread—if you need narrative momentum more than character and comedy, you'll get restless.

Deewaar1975

Amitabh Bachchan in the role that made him a superstar: a son at odds with his mother and his cop brother. It has the melodrama and emotional stakes of Amar Akbar Anthony, but everything is turned inward and devastating.

But It's heavy. Where Amar Akbar Anthony dances through darkness, Deewar sits in it. Some find the mother-son dynamic overwrought.

Hey Ram2000

Both films place religious and communal identity at the center of epic narratives about family and belonging. Where Amar Akbar Anthony resolves its conflicts through love and humor, Hey Ram suggests those conflicts may be irresolvable—it's the inverse answer to the same question.

Kamal Haasan's ambitious, flawed, deeply felt film about a Hindu man's journey through communal violence and revenge. Like Amar Akbar Anthony, it's about what divides brothers and communities—but Haasan asks harder questions and offers no easy reconciliations. The production is baroque and uncompromising.

But It's long, structurally tricky, and Haasan's performance is intense in ways that can feel mannered. It's also politically and emotionally dark in a way Amar Akbar Anthony never attempts.

Chupke Chupke1975

Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in a comedy about a newlywed couple who decide to test each other's love with pranks and deceptions. It's witty, charming, and proves that Bollywood romance doesn't need action beats to be gripping.

But If you're drawn to Amar Akbar Anthony purely for the spectacle and action, this scaled-back approach might feel thin.

Charas1976

A crime ensemble with Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and others caught up in a web of corruption and betrayal. It's grittier and more cynical than Amar Akbar Anthony, but the ensemble cast dynamic has real appeal.

But The plot is convoluted, and it doesn't have the emotional clarity or the humor that makes Amar Akbar Anthony sing throughout.

Rang Birangi1983

A lighter Bollywood ensemble with multiple love stories and comedic situations. It captures the spirit of Amar Akbar Anthony's belief that life contains multitudes of genres at once.

But It's scattered and doesn't have the narrative or emotional focus that gives Amar Akbar Anthony its backbone beneath the chaos.
