Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya
A Bollywood romantic comedy about an engineer who falls for an android designed to be his ideal partner. It's a charming, earnest film that plays the sci-fi premise straight while delivering the song-and-dance spectacle and emotional beats you expect from Hindi cinema. For anyone who likes their love stories with a high-concept twist and doesn't mind letting sentiment win.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like a romance whose sci-fi premise is played straight-faced, letting the comedy grow out of earnest courtship rather than out of gags or slapstick.
Skip it if you want a brisk, gag-heavy comedy, since this one is leisurely and sentimental for most of its 143 minutes and its humour is gentle rather than sharp.
What it asks of you: A two-hour-plus sitting at a gentle pace, letting scenes breathe and asking you to stay with its sentiment rather than hurry past it.

Pyaasa1957
Guru Dutt's melancholic masterpiece about a poet searching for meaning and love in an indifferent world. A haunting meditation on isolation and the cost of idealism, with some of the most beautiful black-and-white cinematography in Indian cinema.
But The pacing is deliberately slow and elegiac; this is not entertainment in the modern sense. The sadness is genuine and unrelenting.

Barfi!2012
A silent romantic adventure about a deaf-mute man and the woman he loves. Ranbir Kapoor gives a joyful physical performance, and the film finds genuine emotion without a single word of dialogue. Pure visual storytelling.
But The tone is whimsical in ways that won't land for everyone. Some find it precious rather than charming.

Piku2015
Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone in a road movie that's really about family, duty, and what it means to grow old together. Funny, tender, and deeply human—no manufactured drama, just life.
But It's a character study disguised as a rom-com. If you want plot fireworks, you'll be disappointed by how small and domestic it stays.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Her2013
Both films ask whether love between a human and a constructed being can be real. Both answer yes, and both mean it.
Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with an artificial intelligence operating system in a near-future Los Angeles. It's funny, sexy, and devastating—a love story that takes its own premise seriously and explores what connection really means.
But It's a film about loneliness and technology that can feel achingly lonely to watch. There's no resolution that feels like victory, and the melancholy lingers.

Queen2014
Kangana Ranaut as a woman who takes her honeymoon alone after being dumped at the altar. It's a genuine coming-of-age film about self-discovery, wrapped in the warmth of a Bollywood romance. Funny and genuinely moving.
But The filmmaking is occasionally uneven. Some scenes feel half-baked, and the tonal shifts aren't always graceful.

Dil Chahta Hai2001
Three friends navigating love, friendship, and growing up. Stylish, witty, and full of warmth. Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Akshaye Khanna have real chemistry, and the emotional beats land hard when they need to.
But The early-2000s styling and music production feel dated now. Some may find the romantic idealism naive.

Badhaai Ho2018
A film about a couple in their sixties becoming unexpectedly pregnant, and their son's shame about it. Somehow it's both hilarious and deeply tender, treating middle-aged desire and family obligation with real nuance and humor.
But The premise invites crude jokes, and the film doesn't entirely avoid them. The second half loses some of the first half's bite.

Amar Akbar Anthony1977
A sprawling, joyful masala film about three brothers separated at birth and reunited by fate. Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and Rajesh Khanna are charismatic, the songs are magnificent, and it's genuinely entertaining pulp.
But The plot is absurd even by Bollywood standards. The pacing meanders. If you want coherence, you're in the wrong theater.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na2008
Two best friends who are obviously in love with each other but too oblivious to see it. Imran Khan and Genelia have real chemistry, the film is colorful and playful, and it understands what it's like to miss what's right in front of you.
But The humor is very young and broad. The supporting characters are thin. It's slight in a way that won't satisfy anyone looking for depth.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil2016
A film about unrequited love, friendship, and the stories we tell ourselves about romance. Karan Johar's most genuinely felt work, with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma bringing real vulnerability to it.
But It's indulgent and sometimes self-pitying. The film is nearly three hours of gorgeous suffering, which some will find self-serious or even annoying.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind2004
Both use speculative technology to ask questions about human connection and whether the artificial—or the ephemeral—can be as true as the real.
Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet play a couple trying to erase each other from their memories after a painful breakup. It's a science-fiction film that's really about why we keep loving even when it hurts. Visually strange, emotionally perfect.
But The structure is deliberately nonlinear and can be disorienting. It's also quietly devastating. Not a film for when you're already sad.

Chungking Express1994
Both films are love stories that treat the longing as more important than the resolution. Both find romance in the gap between people, real or artificial.
Wong Kar-wai's dizzying, gorgeous film about two Hong Kong cops failing to connect with the people they love. The cinematography is sumptuous, the characters are tender beneath their aloofness, and the city itself becomes a character. A visual and emotional feast.
But The plot is deliberately fragmented and dreamlike. If you need clarity and forward momentum, this will frustrate you. It's also very specifically of its time and place.
