Wong Kar-wai's electric, aching diptych about two heartbroken Hong Kong cops and the women who drift through their lives — one a cryptic drug smuggler in a blonde wig, the other a dreamy waitress obsessed with 'California Dreamin''. Shot fast and cheap on 16mm, it's all jump cuts, neon blur and longing. Less a plot than a mood you fall into and don't want to leave.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love films that drift through neon-soaked nights, stitching two loosely connected romances together with restless camera moves, pop songs and a lot of quiet looking.

Skip it if you need a story that tightens its grip and drives toward a clear destination, since this one wanders on purpose and may feel loose or aimless to anyone wanting plot first.

What it asks of you: Around ninety minutes of unhurried attention, with long pauses, sudden jumps between two stories, and a tone that shifts from wistful to playful without much warning.

Wong Kar-wai has cited the French New Wave as a direct influence; Chungking Express's jump cuts, jazzy tempo and romantic drift trace straight back to Breathless.

Godard's jump cuts, restless handheld camera and cool, drifting romanticism are the direct ancestor of everything Wong Kar-wai does here — this is where that visual language was born.

But It's black and white, in French, and its cynicism about love is much sharper and less tender.

Lost in Translation2003

Two lonely people drift into each other's orbit in a disorienting city, filmed with the same tenderness for strangers passing through each other's lives.

But Quieter and more Western in its rhythms; some find the connection between its leads underexplored.

But It's gentle, PG family animation with none of Chungking Express's adult melancholy or urban grit.
