My Sassy Girl

A South Korean romantic comedy where a meek young man falls for an unpredictable, chaotic woman who derails his entire life. It's funny, sweet, and genuinely weird—equal parts slapstick and heartfelt. Perfect if you want romance that feels fresh and surprising rather than safe.

TMDb rating3.8

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy romantic comedies that run on sharp, combustible chemistry and a leading woman who refuses to be pinned down, with a bittersweet undertow beneath the pranks.

Skip it if you want a tight, brisk romance; at nearly two and a half hours its goofy escalations and mood swings can feel indulgent, and its humor is loud and unsubtle.

What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, unhurried ride that swings between slapstick and sentiment, and stay patient through the wild turns in tone before the heart of it lands.

Legally Blonde2001

Both films center on an unexpectedly magnetic female lead who disrupts her love interest's orderly world while revealing unexpected depth beneath the surface chaos. Funny, charming, and full of personality.

But The cutesy-pink aesthetic and relentless cheerfulness can feel exhausting if you're not in the mood for something deliberately unsubtle.

Amélie2001

Whimsical, visually inventive, full of romantic hope and a character who changes the world around them through sheer force of personality and weirdness. Both celebrate the beautiful strangeness of loving someone.

But It's precious and deliberate in a way that can feel precious—precious about being precious. Also quite French, which isn't everyone's speed.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind2004

A romance that doesn't follow the standard script, built on the idea of loving someone despite their—and your own—chaotic, difficult nature. Strange, moving, and genuinely inventive about what connection means.

But It's melancholic and disorienting by design. If you want a film that wraps everything up neatly, this will frustrate you.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Punch-Drunk Love2002

Both films use comedy and chaos to explore how love requires surrendering control. The male lead's world gets unmade by desire and comes out better. Different tones entirely—one comic, one disturbing—but the same engine underneath.

A man undone by love in a completely different register—surreal, unsettling, and genuinely strange rather than conventionally charming. Shows how obsession and devotion are two sides of the same coin. Anderson's only straightforward love story, and it's glorious.

But It's deliberately alienating and weird. If you want conventional warmth, this film actively works against you. Also quite short and abrupt.

Notting Hill1999

A romantic comedy where an ordinary guy gets upended by someone far more extraordinary and magnetic, told with wit and genuine heart. Easy to watch and deeply satisfying.

But It's very of its moment—the 90s romantic comedy thing that some people have now moved past. Also quite slow in places.

Breakfast at Tiffany's1961

A man undone by a woman he can't quite figure out, who is simultaneously selfish and deeply lovable. A classic that did the 'wild girl softens via love' archetype first and best.

But The racism is dated and appalling. Also, Audrey Hepburn's character is almost deliberately impossible to pin down, which some find infuriating.

10 Things I Hate About You1999

A spirited, difficult girl and the boy who loves her despite her sharper edges. Genuinely funny, warmly written, and surprisingly smart about how people use armor to protect themselves.

But High school setting with the attendant drama. If you've aged out of caring about prom and popular kids, the stakes can feel thin.

About a Boy2002

A man's carefully constructed comfortable life gets dismantled by unexpected relationships that teach him something about actually connecting with other people. Funny and genuinely moving.

But It's a bit too clever about its own indie-rock sensibility. Can feel self-satisfied in moments.

Bridget Jones's Diary2001

A woman who is a walking disaster becomes irresistible precisely because of her chaos. Funny, warm, and genuinely feels like a living relationship rather than a plot device.

But It's dated—the humor about body type and dating mishaps feels very early 2000s. Also quite sentimental in a calculated way.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall2008

A romantic comedy that actually cares about the emotional reality underneath the gags. Messy, funny, and surprisingly kind-hearted about how people hurt and heal each other.

But It's raunchy in a way that some find jarring alongside the genuine sentiment. The jokes don't always land for everyone.

Crazy Rich Asians2018

Both center an Asian female character as the force of nature rather than the love interest who gets softened by devotion. She remains herself. The romance happens because of that, not despite it.

A contemporary film that captures the same energy—a woman with agency and edge, a man who has to adapt to her world rather than her adapting to his. Gorgeous, funny, and genuinely joyful about representation and romance.

But It's considerably glossier and more polished. If you prefer rough edges, this might feel too commercially calculated. Also significantly later.
