Sky Rojo is a breakneck Spanish thriller about three women escaping a nightclub and their abusive pimp. Visually stylised and kinetic, it prioritises character momentum over realism—think *Thelma & Louise* remixed by a music video director. It's for anyone who wants their crime drama turbocharged with neon colour and feminist rage, even if the plot sometimes sacrifices sense for spectacle.

Thelma & Louise1991
The spiritual ancestor: two women on the run, bonding through crisis, refusing to be recaptured. Ridley Scott's film has the moral weight and iconic status that makes it the essential comparison point.
But Nearly 35 years old and filmed in the American Southwest rather than contemporary Europe. The pacing is deliberate where Sky Rojo is frantic.

La Casa de Papel2017
Spanish Netflix thriller with the same kinetic energy, ensemble cast dynamics, and willingness to prioritise style and momentum over airtight plotting. Shares the same creative DNA.
But Eight seasons is a massive commitment. Quality varies significantly across the run, especially in later seasons.

Killing Eve2018
Two women locked in a cat-and-mouse dance, each season a different register of tension. Like Sky Rojo, it's visually inventive and treats female rage and survival as central drama rather than subplot.
But The tone shifts unpredictably between psychological thriller and dark comedy, which some find brilliant and others find tonally confused.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer1997
Both centre female friendship and solidarity as the actual subject, not the subplot. Both treat the women's relationship as more important than whatever external threat chases them.
Seven seasons of a young woman discovering her power and building unshakeable bonds with other women. Like Sky Rojo, it's about female friendship as the real source of survival and strength. Different genre, same engine.
But Starts as teen melodrama and the early seasons have dated visual effects. Takes several episodes to find its voice. Requires patience.

Bound1996
The Wachowskis' debut: two women, extreme circumstances, stylised violence, and genuine stakes. A masterclass in visual storytelling and queer tension that influenced everything Sky Rojo aspires to be.
But At 89 minutes it's tightly wound and occasionally hermetic. Doesn't spell things out; you have to keep up.

Girlboss2017
Shorter episodes (around 30 minutes), a woman surviving on grit and refusal to play by the rules, and Charlize Theron's presence gives it moral weight even when the story bends toward wish-fulfilment.
But Cancelled after one season. The ending doesn't resolve much, and the tone wavers between comedy and genuine hardship.

Vagabond2019
Korean thriller with three women at its core, rapid-fire pacing, conspiracy elements, and visual flair. The energy matches Sky Rojo even if the plotting is more complex.
But Sixteen episodes of increasingly baroque conspiracy. If you need your thriller to make complete sense, this will frustrate you.

Safe2018
British thriller about a woman escaping danger and uncovering corruption. Michael C. Hall is magnetic, and each episode runs about 45 minutes of pure propulsion.
But More grounded and less stylised than Sky Rojo. If you came for the neon kinetics, this plays it straight.

The Fall2013
Woman detective hunting a serial killer through Belfast. Stella Gibson is one of television's great protagonists—intelligent, furious, and never passive. Dark, smart, and relentless.
But Five seasons of cat-and-mouse can feel repetitive. The final season divides viewers sharply on whether it lands or outstays its welcome.

Godless2017
A woman-run town becomes refuge for a man on the run. One season, six episodes, feminist Western with Michelle Dockery and Jeff Daniels. Visually striking and morally complex.
But Cancelled after one season before the story fully resolved. The premise is more interesting than the execution sometimes manages.

His House2020
Both use heightened visual style and genre machinery to explore what it means for women to be hunted and pursued. Both refuse to sentimentalise that experience.
A couple of South Sudanese refugees haunted by trauma in a hostile British environment. 88 minutes of horror used to explore displacement, loss, and survival. Visually ambitious and emotionally devastating in ways Sky Rojo only flirts with.
But Genuinely dark and grounded in real suffering. If you wanted Sky Rojo for the style and velocity, this is heavier and will sit with you wrong.

Chungking Express1994
Both weaponise visual style—neon, colour, kinetic editing—to convey emotion and speed rather than relying on exposition. Both are more interested in the texture of being on the run than the mechanics of why.
Wong Kar-wai's 97-minute romantic thriller shot in neon-soaked Hong Kong. Two interlocking stories, stylised to the point of intoxication, colour and mood as characters themselves. A visual feast that proves style can be substance.
But Plot is deliberately slight and elliptical. If you need narrative momentum and clear stakes, this prioritises feeling and aesthetics over plot. Requires surrender.
