My Holo Love
A South Korean sci-fi romance about a woman with face blindness who falls for an AI hologram—except the hologram's human creator is also in love with her. It's tender and strange, genuinely funny about loneliness, and unafraid to sit with awkwardness. For anyone who's ever felt more comfortable talking to a screen than a person.

Her2013
Spike Jonze's meditation on intimacy with artificial intelligence, told with such warmth and specificity that the central romance feels real. A spiritual ancestor to what My Holo Love is attempting.
But The ending is deliberately unsatisfying in ways some find pretentious. Long stretches are quiet and observational rather than dramatically propulsive.

Crash Landing on You2019
A Netflix K-drama that nails the same balance of romantic comedy and genuine emotional vulnerability. Features a similarly off-kilter premise handled with sincerity and charm.
But If you don't buy the central couple's chemistry early, the show has nowhere to hide. The fish-out-of-water plot can feel thin.

Black Mirror2011
A single episode that explores the exact same territory—technology, grief, and the uncanny valley of artificial companionship. Devastating and perfect.
But It's deliberately bleak and builds toward something troubling rather than uplifting. Thirty minutes of mounting dread.

Something you would not have found on your own.
Chungking Express1994
Both find poetry in one-sided affection and the melancholy of loving someone you can't truly reach. Both suggest that proximity to another person—even impossible proximity—transforms us.
Wong Kar-wai's masterpiece about missed connection and urban loneliness, filmed with such visual intoxication that watching feels like being in love yourself. Two separate love stories, both achingly beautiful.
But It's deliberately impressionistic and plot-light. If you need clear narrative momentum, this will frustrate you deeply. Subtitles required.

Love, Death & Robots2019
An anthology that frequently explores consciousness, artificial life, and connection in gorgeously animated vignettes. Wildly inventive and emotionally generous.
But It's wildly uneven—some episodes are brilliant, others miss badly. Requires patience and tolerance for tonal whiplash.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind2004
A film about memory, identity, and whether we're even capable of real connection. As strange and searching as My Holo Love, with stunning formal inventiveness.
But Deliberately fragmented and disorienting. Some will find it more clever than moving; others will be lost entirely.

Lovesick2014
A British comedy-drama about awkward people navigating dating and intimacy with genuine sweetness. Less sci-fi but the same emotional DNA.
But The first season is significantly better than what follows. It can feel slight compared to heavier dramas.

Westworld2016
A sprawling exploration of artificial consciousness and what it means to feel. Season one particularly mines the same discomfort and wonder about the boundaries between human and machine.
But The show collapses under its own mythology by season two. Only the first season is genuinely worth your time.

Always Be My Maybe2019
A romantic comedy about people who can't quite figure out how to be together, made with real tenderness and humor. The emotional specificity rivals many dramas.
But It's ultimately a fairly conventional rom-com dressed up nicely. Those wanting something truly strange should look elsewhere.

Oxygen2021
A French sci-fi thriller about isolation, memory, and consciousness. Claustrophobic and strange in ways that feel adjacent to My Holo Love's core questions.
But It's a locked-room thriller with minimal dialogue. The pace is deliberately slow; patience is essential.

Uncanny2015
The same core scenario—a woman and an artificial intelligence navigating the boundaries of connection—but treated as thriller rather than romance. Shows what happens when the premise becomes sinister.
An indie science-fiction film about a roboticist and a journalist testing an advanced AI. It's confined, intimate, and builds genuine tension through conversation and philosophical sparring.
But Genuinely obscure and slow-burn. Shot on a micro-budget with two actors in one location. Some will find it tedious.

The Midnight Gospel2020
All three are essentially about connection through technology and the strange intimacy of talking to someone (or something) without the distraction of physical presence. But this one weaponizes that intimacy toward genuine spiritual inquiry.
An animated series about a man with a virtual reality simulator who visits dying worlds, having long philosophical conversations. Funny and profound, gorgeous and devastating. Animation allows moods Her and My Holo Love can only hint at.
But It's a talking-heads show where 80% of episodes are just two people in a room discussing death, meaning, and Buddhism. The premise can sound like punishment.
