Lovesick

Other titles called Lovesick: the 1983 film.

A British comedy about a man who contracts an STI and decides to track down his exes to tell them, using the mortification as a springboard for self-examination. It's warm, awkward, genuinely funny, and interested in why people hurt each other—even when they're trying not to. For anyone who loves character-driven comedy with real feeling underneath.

TVMaze rating3.7

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like romantic comedy that is frank, messy and very funny about sex, and you enjoy a lead who makes poor decisions with total conviction, closer in spirit to Fleabag than to a polished rom-com.

Skip it if you want romance that plays it straight, since the sex talk is blunt, the jokes are crude at times, and the bleak moments of Dylan's self-absorption can grate over a whole episode.

What it asks of you: Thirty-minute episodes that move briskly, with a lot of talking and little downtime, so it asks you to keep up with rapid banter and to sit with a character who often digs himself deeper.

Fleabag2016

A British woman narrates her disasters to camera with the same blend of sharp humour and unexpected vulnerability. Both shows understand that comedy and genuine emotional reckoning aren't opposites—they're the same conversation.

But The first season is only six episodes, and it ends on a cliffhanger that some find frustrating. Also, the tone shifts quite a bit in season two.

You're the Worst2014

A show about two selfish people trying (and failing, and trying again) to be in a relationship. It's raucous and mean-spirited on the surface but heartbreaking underneath—and it never stops being funny about the contradiction.

But The leads are genuinely awful people for most of the show. If you need to like characters immediately, this will wear on you for several episodes.

Catastrophe2015

Two people who barely know each other decide to have a baby together. It's brutally honest about sex, relationships, family, and how messy actual love is—and manages to be hilarious without softening any of the truth.

But It's Irish-British comedy, which has a different rhythm. Some episodes feel more like cringe-comedy than warm comedy, which not everyone's after.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

High Fidelity2020

Both use the device of revisiting past lovers as a mirror for self-examination—but High Fidelity takes the same engine and builds something introspective and wounded rather than farcical.

Based on the same novel/film, but this version centers a woman instead of a man—and is about making peace with your past rather than blaming it. The structure is identical to Lovesick's premise (revisit exes), but it's elegant where Lovesick is chaotic, and reckoning where it's farcical.

But It's only one season and it ends ambiguously in a way some found unsatisfying. The tone is much more melancholic than comedic, despite some funny moments.

Master of None2015

Aziz Ansari's show about a 30-something trying to figure out work, love, and identity in New York. It's funny and heartfelt in the same breath, and unafraid to stop and just sit with loneliness or confusion.

But The first season is a bit shapeless—great moments strung together loosely. If you need tight plotting, some episodes feel meandering.

Schitt's Creek2015

A wealthy family loses everything and has to start over in a tiny town. It sounds like a setup for mockery, but the show is genuinely interested in these people learning to be better—without ever losing the comedy.

But The early seasons have a harsher tone than the later ones. Some people bounce off the cringe-comedy vibe before the warmth settles in.

BoJack Horseman2014

An animated show about a washed-up actor that's hilarious and devastating in equal measure. It understands self-sabotage and loneliness in a way that's both very funny and very real.

But It gets genuinely dark and depressing as it goes on. The visual style takes a while to settle—early episodes feel uneven compared to later ones.

Russian Doll2019

A woman keeps dying and being reborn at the same dinner party. Underneath the sci-fi premise is a character study about avoidance, family damage, and learning to be present—with sharp humour throughout.

But Season two is a very different show from season one. Some people find it loses what made the first season special.

Chewing Gum2015

A British comedy about a young woman navigating sex, faith, and identity with anarchic energy and genuine warmth. It's chaotic and silly but rooted in real character and real stakes.

But The humour is very avant-garde and fractured—not everyone finds the comedic style accessible. Some episodes feel more like sketch comedy than narrative.

The Mindy Project2012

A workplace romance wrapped in a silly, optimistic comedy about a woman who wants both a career and love and refuses to apologize for either. It's earnest in a way that feels rare.

But The tone shifts noticeably between seasons. The show gets more romantic and less satirical as it goes, which some people see as a softening of its edge.

Undone2019

Both are about young people recognizing patterns in their relationships and behavior—but Undone takes that premise into magical realism and psychological depth instead of comedy.

An animated series (rotoscoped, stunningly gorgeous) about a woman who might be having a mental breakdown or might be developing a supernatural ability. It's tender and weird and about family damage and trying to feel okay. Nothing quite like it exists.

But It's slow and contemplative, not comedic. Some people find rotoscope animation unsettling rather than beautiful. And it hasn't been renewed, so it ends on a cliffhanger.

Together2021

Both understand that comedy and heartbreak live in the same space—that relationships fall apart the same way they form, and humor is how we survive it. But Together is a character study for adults who've been married; Lovesick is a young person learning to love at all.

During lockdown, a long-married couple decides their relationship is over and spends one day together before separating. It's funny and tender and brutal about how people damage each other without malice. Box Trot Creed and Sharon Horgan are extraordinary.

But It's confined to one location and two people for 90 minutes. If you need plot momentum or scope, it will feel small and claustrophobic. Also deeply sad underneath the humor.
