I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

A buddy comedy about two firefighters who fake a same-sex marriage for health insurance benefits. It's broad, loud, and committed to its ridiculous premise with the kind of earnest stupidity that either makes you laugh or makes you wince. For people who like their comedy uncomplicated and their friendships tested by absurd circumstances.

TMDb rating3.1

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy broad, big-hearted buddy comedy where two lovable lugs stumble through an absurd scheme and the warmth sneaks up on you.

Skip it if you bristle at broad, slapstick-heavy humor or expect sharp satire; the jokes often lean on easy, obvious targets and the sentiment arrives with a heavy hand.

What it asks of you: Two hours of loose, goofy sprawl with long setups and plenty of shouting, so settle in and let the broad strokes wash over you.

Wedding Crashers2005

Two guys deceiving people for personal gain, learning lessons about authenticity and connection. Similar energy—high-concept premise that's really about male friendship tested by circumstances and actual feeling.

But The humor can feel dated and relies on stereotypes. Some scenes haven't aged gracefully in how they treat women.

The Hangover2009

Three guys in an absurd situation, trying to lie their way out of it while genuine affection for each other shines through. That balance of dumb fun with real stakes and camaraderie.

But The sequel and threequel are terrible, which colors how people remember the whole thing. It's also genuinely unpleasant in places.

DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story2004

Same director, same tone—ridiculous setup, committed performances, genuine warmth under the absurdity. Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller doing bits that should be insufferable but somehow work.

But It's stupid in a way that requires you to meet it halfway. If you don't want to do that work, nothing here will persuade you.

Some Like It Hot1959

Same core premise—men pretending to be something they're not for survival, discovering something true about themselves and each other in the process.

Two men in drag fleeing the mob; the template for every movie about men faking domestic partnership. It's funny, sexy, genuinely touching, and 65 years old—proof the premise works when it's done with this much care and craft.

But It's black and white and the pacing is different from modern comedy. The setup takes time and some of the gags require patience.

Old School2003

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in a broad comedy about starting a fraternity. Same register—jokes that are dumb on purpose, characters you kind of root for despite everything.

But The humor is very much of its time. Some of it feels mean-spirited in retrospect, and the pacing sags in the middle.

Tropic Thunder2008

Comedians and character actors doing committed turns in an over-the-top scenario. Smarter than it looks, but still full of the kind of loud, physical comedy that makes Chuck & Larry tick.

But It's trying to be clever and broad at once, which can feel unfocused. Some jokes land better than others, and the movie's aware of that.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop2009

Kevin James as a good-hearted guy in an impossible situation, doing committed physical comedy. Same warmth and earnestness under the silliness that makes Chuck & Larry work.

But It's genuinely stupid sometimes. The plot barely holds together and the romance subplot feels tacked on.

Just Go with It2011

Adam Sandler in another lie-built-on-lies comedy, with a genuine emotional core about single parenthood. Similar DNA—premise is dumb, but the heart is real.

But Sandler's comedies are hit or miss, and this one wobbles. The fake accent bits go on too long and the romance gets syrupy.

Grown Ups2010

A group of friends getting together and being idiots. It's mostly about the comfort of male friendship and not taking yourself seriously, which is Chuck & Larry's whole thing.

But It's basically a home video of comedians hanging out. If you're not in the mood to just watch people you like be around each other, it's tedious.

Rush Hour1998

Two guys who can't stand each other forced into partnership, learning to trust and like each other. That buddy dynamic where the banter matters more than the plot.

But The action sequences haven't aged particularly well. It's dated in ways that go beyond just being from the '90s.

Chungking Express1994

Both are fundamentally about men finding comfort and authenticity through another man, just expressed one way as screwball comedy and the other as romantic meditation.

Wong Kar-wai's aching, gorgeous film about two lonely men finding connection. It's heartfelt about friendship and loneliness in a way that's the complete opposite register—melancholic instead of loud—but gets to the same emotional truth.

But It's a slow, dreamy Hong Kong film in Cantonese. If you want plot momentum or clear narrative, this will frustrate you.

Brokeback Mountain2005

Same question at the center: what if two men admitting they love each other—really admitting it, not joking—mattered more than anything else? One says yes, the other says no.

What if the lie in Chuck & Larry was real, and it destroyed everything? Ang Lee's film about two men whose secret relationship defines their lives. It's serious, tragic, and beautiful—the dark mirror to the buddy-comedy wish fulfillment.

But It's a heavy emotional experience about heartbreak and repression. It's not cathartic and it doesn't resolve cleanly.
