Watch it if you enjoy buddy comedies where the joy comes from two mismatched people bickering their way into real affection, with stunt work that is playful and inventive rather than grim.

Skip it if you want a tight, serious crime thriller; the mystery is a thin backdrop and the jokes and banter often take priority over the investigation itself.

The Defiant Ones1958

Same skeleton as Lee and Carter — two men from opposite worlds forced together by circumstance who slowly earn each other's respect — but Kramer plays it as moral drama instead of comedy, decades before buddy-cop became a genre.

Two escaped convicts, one Black and one white, literally chained together and forced to survive as a pair — the mismatched-partnership engine stripped down to its rawest, most serious form.

But No jokes, no rescue-the-day plot — this is a tense, uncomfortable drama about prejudice, not entertainment in the Rush Hour sense.

Bad Boys1995

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's insult-comedy chemistry and Michael Bay's boom-and-bang direction give you the same loud, funny, testosterone-fuelled ride.

But Meaner in tone and more interested in explosions than character — the jokes land harder but the warmth is thinner.

A polite, old-fashioned Canadian Mountie partnered with a cynical Chicago detective, solving crimes with fish-out-of-water culture clash and genuine warmth across four gentle, funny seasons.

But Slower, softer, and considerably less action-packed — it's TV comfort food, not the adrenaline rush of a Chan set piece.

Training Day2001

Same mismatched-partners-thrown-together structure, but the register flips from comic trust to genuine terror, showing how dark the exact same premise gets when you take the jokes out.

Denzel Washington's corrupt mentor and Ethan Hawke's green rookie spend one long day together, and the buddy-cop dynamic curdles into something genuinely menacing and morally rotten.

But Bleak, paranoid, and violent in ways that offer none of Rush Hour's release — this is the buddy-cop formula with all the fun surgically removed.
